Box Score 2 HASTINGS, Nebraska — The Cloud County Community College baseball team kept right on rolling Wednesday, picking up a pair of non-conference road victories over Hastings College JV to up its winning streak to four in a row and five out of its last six games.
Wednesday's twin bill served as a mid-week tune-up for Cloud County (25-27 overall, 10-18 KJCCC), which won 10-4 and 14-10 over the Mustangs, as it prepares for its final four-game conference series this weekend on the road against Barton Community College.
In Game One, the T-Birds used a pair of big innings to put the game away early to roll to a 10-4 final.
Cloud County struck for five runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from sophomore Kolton Meyer, an RBI walk by freshman Ryan Krolikowski, a two-run single from sophomore catcher Garrett Graveline, and an error by Hastings College JV that allowed Krolikowski to cross home.
Graveline was 3-for-3 with two RBI in Game One, which gave him seven straight hits — he was 0-for-1 in Game Two — dating back to Sunday's series finale against Butler Community College when he was 4-for-4.
After Hastings College JV inched back within a run at 5-4 heading to the third, Cloud ballooned its lead back up to 9-4 with a four-run third inning; the big blow being a two-run single by leadoff man, freshman Ryan Simons, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound, sophomore David Johns picked up his second win of the season after going five strong innings. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out four.
Redshirt freshman Clint Cole picked up the save by pitching two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit, in his first action of the season.
Freshman outfielder Matt Bondarchuk, who already owns the school record for singles in a season (57) and entered the game 10 hits shy of the single-season hits record (77) by Jared Goedert in 2004, was 3-for-4 in Game One. He added another monster performance in Game Two, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, to bring his hit total to 74 on the season.
Bonarchuk's performance highlighted what was a huge offensive performance for Cloud County as it scored 14 runs on 14 hits.
The T-Birds trailed 10-8 entering the seventh before exploding for six runs. Simons broke the 10-10 tie with a two-run single that scored Gabriel Jacobo and Tucker Catlett.
Freshmen outfielders Trae McDaniel and Enrique Gonzalez each finished with two hits, as did sophomore infielder Jose Chacin.
Cloud County will now prepare for this weekend's four-game set against Barton to conclude the regular season. The T-Birds are currently tied with Seward County for sixth in the KJCCC West standings and could finish anywhere between sixth and eighth depending on this weekend's action.
Due to rain concerns on Saturday, first two games of the series have been pushed up to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The final two games of the series are still set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
