CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team kept its hunt for a KJCCC West title alive, and earned some revenge in the process, during a 3-0 victory Friday afternoon against Northwest Kansas Technical College.

With the win, Cloud County (7-3 overall, 5-2 KJCCC) remained within two games of No. 16 Hutchinson Community College (11-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 KJCCC) for first place in the KJCCC West standings and leapfrogged the visiting Mavericks (8-2 overall, 5-2 KJCCC) into second place.

It was also sweet revenge after the T-Birds suffered a disappointing 3-2 overtime loss to NKTC back on September 12 in a game they had dominated scoring chances (20-10 in shots).

"I think we've been the best team in every game we've played this season," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "The games we've lost; we don't finish our scoring chances. The games we've won, we finish."

The T-Birds got rolling early behind the freshmen duo of Angie Vergara and Joana Villanova. Vergara scored her first of two goals eight minutes into the contest, rifling a shot from just inside the box off a pass from Villanova.

Villanova got into the action with her eighth goal of the season — all coming in the last four games —  at the 14:52 mark of the first half, following up her own rebound chance, to give Cloud County a quick 2-0 lead.

The T-Birds would carry that 2-0 lead into the half, then ice the game at the 69:00 mark of the second half with a strike from Vergara, capitalizing on a turnover by the Mavericks.

"Angie is playing on an All-American level right now," Ross said.

Defensively, Ross praised the play of his back row — Ingrid Castro, Hollie Johnston and Yohanna Duliep — and freshman goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan for preserving the shutout. Hannigan finished the afternoon with seven saves.

"Alanya had some big-time saves and our back line was fantastic," Ross said

Up next for Cloud County will be a home meeting with Pratt Community College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
