Box Score CONCORDIA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team punched its ticket to the Region VI Women's Soccer Championship semi-finals following a 3-1 victory over Allen County Community College in Saturday's quarterfinal match up.
Cloud County (13-3 overall) advances to face No. 17 ranked Butler Community College (15-4 overall) at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka.
"If you want to go to the national tournament, you have to beat Butler. Whether that is in the first round, second round, or region finals," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "Butler is very good, but definitely beatable."
As for Saturday's clash with Allen County (8-10 overall), the T-Birds were in control much of the afternoon. They got on the board first at the 7:59 mark of the first half on a great scoring chance set up by freshman defenseman Ingrid Castro, and polished off by freshman forward Abigail Conway.
"Big thing I liked about our first goal was it was off a corner kick. Abby asked for it, Ingrid played it the way she faced, and Abby put it top-shelf," Ross said. "A very quality goal to start the game."
Allen County answered back with a goal at the 15:10 mark as Cloud County's defense got caught too far forward, allowing space for Leigh-Anne Bartlett to sprint in and push a shot far post to tie the game at 1-1.
The score refocused the T-Birds as they quickly recaptured the lead four minutes later. A foul by Allen County just outside the box set up a free kick opportunity for Castro, who fired a missile off the hands of Red Devils' goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 game.
In the second half, freshman forward Joana Villanova gave the T-Birds some insurance with a goal near post at the 59:37 mark, while defensively Cloud County did not allow a shot on goal by Allen County over the final 45 minutes.
"Our back four cleaned things up after that first goal and played really well the rest of the game," Ross said.
Cloud County will look to carry the momentum over to its semi-final matchup against Butler at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The winner will face either Coffeyville Community College or No. 18 ranked Johnson County Community College in the Region VI finals at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3.
