Box Score CONCORDIA, Kansas — On paper, it appeared to be a daunting task. The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team, a freshly reactivated program playing in its first full season since 2013, needed two wins in a 24-hour span over Hutchinson Community College, a perennial national powerhouse, to win the 2017 KJCCC West title.
Cloud County got one of the wins out of the way Sunday, edging the Blue Dragons, 3-2, in double overtime. The T-Birds completed their mission in the encore between the two teams, earning a 2-1, come-from-behind victory in Monday's regular season finale.
According to available KJCCC records, the victory clinched the first KJCCC West title in program history.
"This is the highlight of my career so far," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "I couldn't ask for any more. That's a Hall of Fame coach over there (Hutchinson's Sammy Lane). Hutch is the king of the west, so for a first-year program to beat them twice in two days; I'm kind of at a loss for words right now. I'll need to let it sink in a little."
Cloud County (12-3 overall, 10-2 KJCCC West) completed the feat of upending Hutchinson (13-3-1 overall, 8-3-1 KJCCC West) shorthanded. The T-Birds were without its two starting center midfielders, Maria Barbosa and points leader Angie Vergara, as well as its second leading scorer in forward Maryanne de Castro.
The T-Birds' depth helped weather the storm, while freshman defenseman Ingrid Castro did the heavy lifting with a pair of goals and airtight defensive play anchoring Cloud County's back row.
After the Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead 3 minutes, 35 seconds into the half, Castro was able to halt momentum quickly as she dropped a free kick over the head of Hutchinson's goalkeeper at the 57:03 mark to tie the score at 1-1.
"It was important that we responded quickly. Hutchinson is too good of a team to be playing behind against," Ross said. "That immediate response got our adrenaline going."
Castro would put the T-Birds on top for good with just 1:43 remaining, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity. Her initial shot off the PK was stopped, but Castro tapped home the rebound to give Cloud County a 2-1 advantage.
"Angie would normally take the penalty kick, but she was injured," Ross said. "To have the keeper save the initial shot, but Ingrid still have the composure to put it right back in the net, I was really impressed with that. Ingrid Castro, if she's not playing center back, we're not even close to a conference title. She's the rock of this team."
Ross also praised the work of backup goalkeeper Janne Hamisi, who picked up the win (3-0) in relief Monday. She stopped the lone shot on goal she faced and made correct reads on the ball in her 40:14 of game action.
"(Hamisi) made a huge save right off the bat. She slipped a bit because she was a little nervous, but that was a game-changing moment," Ross said.
Cloud County will now turn its attention toward the Region VI Tournament and its first-round game against either Allen County Community College of Coffeyville Community College on Saturday. As of Monday afternoon, game times are still to be determined.
