Box Score PRATT, Kansas — Due to heavy rains, the Cloud County Community College women's soccer team had a to wait a week before making the road trip to Pratt Community College on Monday for its make-up game against the Beavers.
The delay did little to slow down the red hot T-Birds, who notched their fourth consecutive victory with a 5-0 shutout of Pratt.
Cloud County (6-2 overall, 5-1 KJCCC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Pratt (1-9 overall, 1-5 KJCCC) just 12 minutes into the first half on the first of three goals on the day for freshman Joana Villanova as she finished off a crossing pass sent into the box from Maryanne de Castro.
With the hat trick, Villanova has now scored all six of her goals this season in the past three games.
The T-Birds then added a deflating second goal just before the horn sounded for the end of the first half as sophomore captain Ingrid Silva scored her first goal of the season to give Cloud County a 2-0 advantage.
Cloud would put the game away with three quick scores to begin the second half. Villanova netted her second goal with 39:02 remaining. Following a goal by de Castro four minutes later, Villanova polished off the hat trick with 29:48 remaining on the second of two assists on the day from freshman midfielder, Angie Vergara.
While the box score will show a lopsided finish, Cloud County head coach James Ross said there is still plenty of room for improvement for his team, stressing the importance of unselfishness as the T-Birds take aim at a possible KJCCC West title.
"The women played really well (Monday)," Ross said. "We had another good result. But selfishness could be our Achillies' heel and the girls have to understand that."
The T-Birds will look to extend their winning streak to five games when they continue their mini two-game road swing against Dodge City Community College on Wednesday. Start times were moved up three hours due to expected thunderstorms Wednesday evening. Action will get underway at 2 p.m. with the women's game, men's game will follow at 4 p.m.
