T-Birds earn 2-1, come-from-behind win over Barton on Thursday

Box Score

GREAT BEND, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College women's soccer team kept its hopes of a KJCCC West title alive on Thursday, earning a 2-1 come-from-behind road win over Barton Community College.

With the victory, the T-Birds (9-3 overall, 8-2 KJCCC) head into their final two KJCCC West games against No. 18 ranked Hutchinson (11-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 KJCCC West) with a chance to leapfrog the Blue Dragons in the standings.

Due to a weather postponement earlier in the season, the two teams face each other in Hutchinson on Oct. 21 and then again two days later in Concordia on Oct. 23 to conclude the regular season.

Consistent 20 mile an hour winds and heavy gusts from the south would played a role in Thursday's contest. In the first half, going into the wind, the Cloud County attack struggled to complete passes, make runs and finish its chances despite an 8-2 shot advantage.

Barton capitalized on Cloud's offensive struggles, and a defensive miscue by the T-Birds, when a deep pass from Ariadna Ramirez slipped through the midfield and sprung Larissa Fagundes, who was able to outrun the defense and score one-on-one against Cloud County goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan at the 16:34 mark.

Cloud County bounced back from the tough start to dominate the second half. The T-Birds took advantage of having the wind at their backs as they outshot the Lady Cougars, 16-1, over the final 45 minutes.

Cloud scored the equalizing goal at the 63:03 mark on a goal from freshman forward Joana Villanova. Villanova then assisted on the eventual game winning goal, playing a cross to freshman Maryanne de Castro for a header that put the T-Birds up 2-1 with 9:04 remaining.

"We did a better job finishing in the second half and we'll take the result," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "But we still have to be better. When we don't finish our chances, we are allowing teams to stay in games."

Before squaring off against Hutchinson for the KJCCC West crown, Cloud County will try to clean a few things up when it hosts non-conference foe Hesston Community College at 2 p.m. on Monday.
