T-Birds Drop Opening Series to Jets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Not much went right for the T-Birds in their opening series as they traveled to Enid Oklahoma for a three game set with Northern Oklahoma College. The Jets swept the T-Birds in the three game set.

Cloud had yet to have a full practice outside due to the winter storms that hit Concordia over the past few weeks. Going south to take on a quality opponent in the NOC Jets was going to be a tall task. The rust showed for the T-Birds as they were outscored 30-4 in the series.

Game 1: Cloud 0 NOC-Enid 10

Sophomore Alex Torkelson got the ball in the opener for the T-Birds. Torkelson was sharp in the first but would give up six earned in the second before giving way to freshman Nick Wordekemper who would go the rest of the way for the T-Birds.

Wordekemper entered in the second with just one out and was able to escape the inning by getting two quick outs. He then had trouble fiding the strike zone in the 3rd as he issued walks to the first three batters of the inning. Enid would then hit a bases clearing double to stretch the lead to 9-0.

Enid tacked on one more in the bottom of the 5th to end the game by ten-run rule 10-0.

Freshman outfielder Trace Nelson was 2-2 at the plate for Cloud County. Jake Wells had the T-Birds only other hit in the game.

Game 2: Cloud 3 NOC-Enid 9

Cloud turned to freshman lefthander John Stiger in game two. Stiger did a nice job of minimizing damage as he worked in and out of jams for the first three innings. Stiger allowed two earned in three innings of work.

The Jets took advantage of two Cloud County errors in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 7-0 lead through four. Cole Otto surrendered the runs, although none were earned.

Jacob Grady led off the next inning with a double and Bryce Lievens followed with a single. Gabriel Jacobo hit a sac fly to score Grady and Trace Nelson followed with his third single of the doubleheader. Lievens and Nelson would both score on passed balls to get Cloud back in it at 7-3.

Enid would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 9-3.

Cloud committed four errors in the contest and had just three hits.

Game 3: Cloud 1 NOC-Enid 11

Game three remained scoreless into the third as Freshman LHP Zach Holmes started efficiently sitting down six of the first eight Jets hitters.

Holmes ran into trouble in the 3rd as he allowed back to back triples to start the inning. Enid would plate two in the 3rd to take an early 2-0 lead.

Cloud got two quick outs to start the bottom of the 5th. The Jets then had four straight batters reach base before freshman reliever Chris Langin surrendered a grand slam in his first collegiate appearance.

Ryan Cornell responded for Cloud in the top of the sixth with a solo blast but it was too little too late as Northern Oklahoma ran away with it 11-1.

Freshman Jose Chacin had two hits in the loss.

The T-Birds will spend the week preparing for Fort Scott. Cloud will head to Fort Scott to play the Greyhounds in a four game set with doubleheaders on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th.

Cloud plays their first nine games on the road and will open their home slate with McCook on January 27th.
