Box Score HESSTON, Kansas- On Monday, the Cloud County Community College men's soccer team moved up from No. 17 to No. 14 in the weekly NJCAA poll. On Tuesday, the T-Birds went back to work padding their resume as they earned a convincing 6-0 road win over Hesston College.
Freshmen Reda Chakof and Luiz Garcia each had two goals to lead the offensive outburst for the T-Birds (10-0-1 overall, 7-0-1 KJCCC).
"Reda is playing so well because now he understands his position. He's so coachable," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "Luiz finally started shooting low to corners. Early on this season, Luiz was getting robbed by some really good saves by other teams' goalies. Now those shots are starting to go in the back of the net."
The T-Birds found the back of the net early and often as freshman James Ndubueze opened up the scoring just six minutes in. Garcia tallied his first goal of the afternoon five minutes later to get Cloud County off and running. Cloud would take a 3-0 lead into the half after Chakof found the back of the net with 4:30 remaining.
The second half saw more of the same as the T-Birds, who did not allow a shot on goal Tuesday, dominated time of possession. Freshman Roberto Gomes, who entered the contest with two assists and 12 shots but no goal to show for it, scored his first collegiate goal with 43:30 remaining to up the lead to 4-0.
Garcia and Chakof polished off the 6-0 shutout, scoring with 15:17 remaining and 1:15 remaining, respectively.
Cloud County's performance, and its on-field behavior Tuesday, was noted by Hesston College's head coach, Matt Gerlach.
"(Gerlach) came up to me after the game and said 'Not only are you guys the best team in the region, you guys win with class,'" Ross said. "He really gave us a big compliment on how well our kids act."
The T-Birds will look to build off the momentum and finish their five-game road swing out strong when they travel to face Pratt Community College at 4 p.m. tomorrow. A win would all but clinch the KJCCC West Division for Cloud County with just four conference games remaining in the regular season.
"Tomorrow's game is as big as last week's game against Barton because Pratt has only lost twice in conference," Ross said. "We have to play Pratt twice and tomorrow is a must-win game for us. We win tomorrow then we're closing in on a conference title."
