Box Score CONCORDIA, Kansas- The No. 10 ranked Cloud County Community College men's soccer team entered Wednesday's contest against Pratt Community College having earned shutouts in four of their last five wins.
Freshman goalkeeper Calum Ellis Jones received very little work during that stretch. But the native of Ascot, England earned every bit of his shutout Wednesday, recording a career-high eight saves in the T-Birds' 1-0 victory over the Beavers.
"The first 15 minutes, Calum played the game of the season because if he hadn't have played that well, we could have easily been down 3-0," said Cloud County head coach, James Ross. "If you go down 3-0 to a coach like Kevin Kewley (Beavers' head coach), one of the top coaches in the region, you're not coming back to win that game."
Jones weathered the early storm, highlighted by two bang-bang saves inside the box just 12 minutes into the game. The effort from Jones was a welcomed site for Ross and the T-Birds as postseason play nears.
"Now (Calum's) confidence is through the roof at the most perfect time," Ross said.
The Cloud County keeper would get some goal support late in the first half as freshman striker Rafael Santos came off the bench, cleaned up a rebound in the box, and gave the T-Birds a 1-0 lead with 2:51 remaining in the half.
"I call him 'Super Sub.' He is in the right spot at the right time everytime he scores a goal," Ross said. "He's a true forward. He has a knack being where he needs to be. When he has a chance to score a goal, he doesn't miss."
Each team played strong defensive second halfs, limiting the majority of shots on goal to come from 20 or more yards away.
With the win, the T-Birds improved to 14-0-1 overall on the season and finish regular season Region VI West play at 11-0-1.
The team announced on Wednesday that an additional regular season game has been added to the schedule; a road contest against NAIA school, Bethany College, set for 7 p.m. on Monday.
"The game against Bethany is just so we don't have an eight-day break (before the Region VI tournament)," Ross said. "I scheduled that game because I have a lot of respect for Bethany's coach (Shane Taylor), it's going to be a nice, fair game with no dirty tackles. We're going there to get better at keeping the ball, starting games off better, and finishing games off better. With this group, there is still a lot of room to grow before next Thursday."
