Box Score The Cloud County Community College men's basketball team fell just short of pulling off a comeback victory against No. 19 Butler Community College, falling 93-91 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play on Saturday, February 28.
The T-Birds never led in the contest, after Butler scored the first ten points of the ballgame. Cloud County trailed by as many as 13 points in the first-half and found themselves behind 56-46 at the break.
Cloud County again trailed by 13 points at 90-77 with 5:11 remaining. The T-Birds then went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, capped by a three-pointer from redshirt freshman forward
Manasseh Stackhouse, to climb within five points at 90-85 with just over three minutes to play. Butler freshman Tristan Hankins scored on a layup, but Cloud County sophomore
Elidjah Savane answered with a thunderous dunk to make it 92-87 with 2:08 to go.
After two straight empty possessions, Cloud County freshman forward
D'ontez Walker scored four unanswered points in the lane on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 92-91 with 31 seconds remaining.
Forced to foul, the T-Birds sent Hankins to the free-throw line where he made one of two foul shots with 13 seconds left.
Following a timeout, Cloud County had one last opportunity to tie or win the game, but a three-point attempt by sophomore guard
Syncere Burnette missed and Butler escaped with the 93-91 victory.
Four T-Birds scored in double-figures, led by Walker with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and 6-of-11 makes from the foul line.
Burnette had 18 points with three made three-pointers plus a team-best nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Savane had 17 points, five rebounds and three steals off the bench, while Stackhouse contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Cloud County held a slim 37-36 rebounding edge. The T-Birds held a 54-32 advantage in points in the paint, but Butler connected on 14 three-pointers compared to Cloud County's seven made treys. Cloud County also had 16 turnovers which led to 24 points for the Grizzlies.
Cloud County will close out the regular season on Wednesday, March 4 with a road trip to Independence Community College at 7:30 pm.
