Cloud County Men's Basketball Team Secures Fourth Straight Win with 91-85 Victory Over Garden City

Box Score Four players scored in double-figures as the Cloud County Community College men's basketball team withstood a physical, high-pressure battle to earn a 91-85 home win over Garden City Community College on Wednesday, February 25 at Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

The win marked the final home game of the regular season for the T-Birds and the team's fourth win in a row. Cloud County has improved to 17-11 on the year and 12-10 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play, sweeping the regular-season series against the Broncbusters.  

Cloud County jumped out to a 26-11 advantage midway through the first-half. The T-Birds extended their lead out to as many as 23 points before Garden City answered back with a 14-4 spurt to end the half. Cloud County held a 42-29 advantage entering the break.

The T-Birds maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second-half. A three-pointer by Garden City sophomore guard Jordon Nevill cut the lead down to eight points with 16:21 to play, but the T-Birds responded with a 6-2 run to regain control. A triple from freshman guard Xavier Johnson again trimmed the lead down to single-digits, but Cloud County again scored six of the next eight points to maintain momentum. A tip-in by freshman forward Mangok Gach narrowed the lead to single-digits with 1:32 remaining, but Cloud County knocked down eight free-throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.

The T-Birds were led by freshman forward D'ontez Walker who had a game-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Walker added eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 22 minutes. Sophomore forward Elidjah Savane scored 16 points and led the team with 10 rebounds while adding four assists off the bench. Redshirt freshman forward Manasseh Stackhouse had 12 points while pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Sophomore guard Kuel Akot had 11 points.

Sophomore guard Syncere Burnette and freshman guard Kaidan Chatham narrowly missed reaching double-figures. Burnette finished with nine points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Chatham added nine points, three rebounds and two steals.

Cloud County shot 34-of-63 (54.0 percent) from the field and held Garden City to 32-of-68 (47.1 percent shooting), while winning the rebounding battle 43-27 and outscoring the Broncbusters 60-40 in points in the paint.

The T-Birds will close out the regular season with a two-game road swing, beginning with a game against No. 17 Butler Community College on Saturday, February 28 at 4 pm, followed by a matchup with Independence Community College on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 pm.
