Box Score The Cloud County Community College men's basketball team survived a late-scare to capture an 87-85 victory over the Garden City Broncbusters in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) play on Saturday, January 10. Four T-Birds finished in double-figures and Cloud County scored 58 points in the paint on their way to winning their third straight since returning to action from the Christmas holiday break.

The T-Birds (9-7, 4-6 KJCCC) trailed by two points at the halftime break but opened the second-half with back-to-back baskets from freshman forward D'ontez Walker and redshirt freshman forward Manasseh Stackhouse that gave them a 48-46 lead. The two teams exchanged baskets before a pair of free-throws from sophomore guard DJ Holloway put Cloud County back in front at 52-50 with 16:54 to play. The T-Birds never trailed again.

Garden City cut it to one point on eight different occasions, the last of which came on a bucket by sophomore forward Devonte Reed to make it 83-82 with 2:43 remaining. Cloud County sophomore wing Samuel Akot soon made a pair of free-throws and sophomore forward Elidjah Savane scored in the lane, sandwiched around a free-throw from Garden City freshman forward Lucas Kalimba, to give the T-Birds an 87-83 lead with just under a minute to go. Garden City sophomore guard Dasean Lewis connected on two shots from the foul line with 20 seconds to play, trimming the deficit to two points at 87-85. Cloud County traveled on the ensuing possession, and the costly turnover provided the Broncbusters with a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds. Freshman guard Zaire Lott missed a three-point attempt, but managed to get his own rebound. Lewis was then fouled on a desperation heave with 0.4 seconds remaining, giving Garden City a chance to win the game. But Lewis came up empty on all three of his attempts from the foul line and Cloud County escaped with the two-point win.

The victory snapped Cloud County's three-game losing streak to Garden City.

Stackhouse registered his second straight double-double and his third in the last four games as he tallied a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kuel Akot drilled four three-pointers to finish with a season-high 21 points. He also added four steals. Walker added 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists. Savane came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five rebounds.

Cloud County shot 35-of-66 (53.0 percent) from the field, 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from three-point range, and 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) from the free-throw line, while Garden City shot 34-of-77 (44.2 percent) from the floor, 6-of-24 (25.0 percent) from behind the arc, and 11-of-21 (52.24 percent) from the foul line. The T-Birds outrebounded the Broncbusters, 39-33.

Following the victory, the T-Birds will return home to take on the Butler Community College Grizzlies on Wednesday, January 14 at 8 pm.
