Cloud County Men's Basketball Team Squanders Halftime Lead in Home Loss to No. 14 Coffeyville

Box Score For the second time in the last three days, the Cloud County Community College men's basketball team blew a double-digit lead as they were outscored 49-28 in the second-half and fell 74-67 to No. 14 Coffeyville on Monday, February 17 in Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

Freshman forward Elidjah Savane and redshirt freshman guard Keyon Garrett-Miller led the T-Birds' attack with 15 points each. Savane, who has scored in double-figures in 22 games this season including the team's last nine games, also had a team-high eight rebounds. Redshirt freshman Matthew Garber added 11 points with three made three-pointers. Freshman guard Syncere Burnette was in double-figures for the ninth time in the last ten game as he finished with 10 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Fallou Koite provided a spark off the bench, finishing with eight points.

The T-Birds trailed 20-18 midway through the first-half before Koite drilled a three-pointer to put Cloud County up 21-20. The shot started a 21-2 surge, capped by a pair of free-throws from Savane, and Cloud County led 39-22 with 55 seconds remaining before halftime. The Red Ravens, who were held without a field goal for over nine minutes, closed out the half with a three-pointer by freshman guard Konstantin Popovic. Cloud County went into the break with a 39-25 advantage.

Coffeyville came out of halftime firing. Sophomore guard Brian Griffith and freshman guard Trenton Ruth both connected on early shots from long-range and the Red Ravens went 4-of-5 from the free-throw line in a 20-6 scoring run to pull back to within one point at 46-45 with 9:56 to play.

Cloud County tried to stem the tide when Garrett-Miller scored in the paint on the ensuing possession, but redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kemboi went 1-for-2 on a trip to the foul line before freshman forward Abdul Kota threw down a massive dunk, tying the game at 48-all with 8:26 remaining.

A three-pointer by Burnette kept the T-Birds in front.

Coffeyville redshirt sophomore Justin Taylor buried a three of his own before Ruth made a four-point play by making a three-pointer, drawing a foul and then making the free-throw. The four-point play put Coffeyville ahead at 57-54 with with 5:25 to go.

The T-Birds battled back to tie the game twice and looked poised to pounce before the Red Ravens seized control with a late 8-1 run to lead 68-61 with 1:01 remaining. Coffeyville's final eight points of the game came from the free-throw line and the Red Ravens hung on to secure the 74-67 win.

Coffeyville shot 19-of-46 (41.3 percent) from the field with nine made threes at a 39.1 percent clip. The Red Ravens also hit 27-of-37 (73.0 percent) from the foul line. The T-Birds made ten shots from deep and were 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) overall and made 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Coffeyville held a 40-25 rebounding edge, leading to a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Cloud County returns to action on Wednesday, February 19 when they host Garden City Community College for an 8 pm game inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
