Cloud County's Brayden Hill Finishes in First Place at Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open

Cloud County freshman Brayden Hill earned his third individual title of the season at the Conner/Openheim Doane Open in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday, December 6, hosted by Doane University.

Hill won the 285 lbs. bracket with a 4-0 record. After receiving a first round bye, Hill opened the tournament with a fall over Kingston Hanson of Morningside University and followed with an 8-0 major decision over Colton Mccutcheon of Doane University and a 4-1 decision over Cooper Johnson of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa. Hill secured the title with a 3-1 decision Christian Clark of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.

The next day, December 7, Hill was the lone T-Bird that traveled to Hays, Kansas to wrestle in the Bob Smith Open. Hill went 2-2 overall. Hill began with a fall over Keyven Schroeder of Barton Community College, and followed with a 6-2 decision over Kevaun Jones of Colby Community College. In the championship quarterfinal round, Hill fell by a 6-2 decision to De'Leon Freeman of Newman University. Hill was then a medical forfeit in his consolation match to Phillip Chobot of New Mexico Highlands.

Also at the Conner/Oppenhiem Doane Open, freshman David Holguin went 3-2 overall at 197 lbs. Holguin received a first round bye before winning a sudden victory match over Caleb Schwerdtfeger of Southeast Community College by a 2-1 decision. In the championship quarterfinals, Holguin dropped a 16-2 major decision to Kevin Lund of Baker University. Holguin earned two wins in the consolation bracket, winning by fall over Aiden Griffin of Hastings College, and winning by a 4-2 decision over Colby Reichenbach of Doane University. Holguin concluded the tournament by dropping a match by fall to Treyton Tweton of Midland University in the consolation semifinals.

Freshman Luke Potter also advanced to the championship quarterfinals after winning two matches by fall at 141 lbs. Potter pinned Ethan Silva of Benedictine College in his first round match, and Sebastian Armendariz of Hastings College in his second round bout. After dropping a 16-2 major decision to Caleb Morales of Montana State-Northern in the quarterfinals, Potter forfeited his consolation bracket match to Kody Kretzer of Missouri Baptist University.

Freshman Drew Sterrett also had two wins by fall on the day at 149 lbs. Sterrett lost his first match of the day by fall to Tennyson Kurtz of Southeast Community College, before bouncing back by pinning Hunter True of Midland University and Gus Armstrong of Valiant Prep. Sterrett's tournament run ended with a 10-3 decision loss to Hayden Biggs of Benedictine College.

Cloud County is now off until January 9 when the team will head to Miami, Oklahoma for the annual National Junior College Athletic Association Coaches Association Duals, hosted by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
