The Cloud County Community College wrestling team had seven wrestlers earn spots on the podium, including individual champion
Brayden Hill (285 lbs.) on Saturday, November 8 at the Maverick Open, hosted by Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa.
Hill, a freshman from Garden City, Kansas, secured the top spot after a first period fall over Cooper Johnson of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa in the finals. Hill won three of his four matches in the tournament by fall, with pins over Christian Clark of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa and Southeast Community College's Grayson Robinson. Hill opened the tournament with a 21-6 technical fall over Marcus Rodriguez of Fort Hays Tech Northwest, improving his record to 5-2 on the season.
Freshman
Tucker Jackson (184 lbs.) continued his strong start to the season with a third place finish. After losing to Southeast Community College freshman Jack Doughty for the second time this season by a 21-12 major decision, Jackson battled back to win four consecutive matches, scoring falls over Southeast freshman Jayden Chapman and Southeast freshman Brandon Sanchez, and technical fall victories over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa sophomore Aiden Vasquez and Franco Gonzales (unattached).
Freshmen
Luke Potter (133 lbs.) and
Dionisio Holguin (197 lbs.) both earned fourth place finishes at the meet.
After falling in overtime to Fort Hays Tech Northwest freshman Trace Brisendine to start the day, Potter rallied with several key victories, beating Fort Hays Tech Northwest freshman Steven McIntyre by a first period fall, Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa freshman John Marriott by a 21-5 technical fall, and unattached wrestler Kolby Quint by a 6-4 decision. In his final bout of the weekend, Potter lost by a second period fall to Cowley College freshman Louden Wolfe.
Holguin opened his tournament run with a 16-4 major decision over Southeast Community College redshirt sophomore Caleb Schwerdtfeger. After dropping an 18-15 decision to freshman Jason Osgood of Cowley College in the championship quarterfinals, Holguin dropped to the consolation bracket where he wrestled teammate and twin brother,
David Holguin. A takedown in the third period allowed Dionisio to earn the win by a 7-5 decision. Holguin closed out the tournament by dropping a 12-6 decision to Bryan Wilson (unattached).
David Holguin (197 lbs.) went 3-2 on the day to take fifth place. After losing to his brother in the consolation round, Holguin regrouped to win his fifth place bout by a first period fall over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa freshman Tyzel Zachry.Â

Freshman
Dakota Gibson (141 lbs.) also earned a fifth place finish. After starting the day 2-0 with a 17-1 technical fall over Bethany College freshman Cabel Boggus and a 14-4 major decision over Daniel Morriss II (unattached), Gibson had a tough run, dropping two straight matches. In the fifth place match, Gibson won via a medical forfeit by Cowley College sophomore Cam Kiser.
Competing for the first time this season, sophomore
Noah Bailey (149 lbs.) placed sixth. Bailey went 3-3 overall, winning by a 16-6 major decision against Southeast Community College freshman Gavin Patterson, an 11-2 major decision over unattached wrestler Jude Robinson, and a first period fall over Southeast Community College sophomore Tennyson Kurtz.

Drew Sterrett (141 lbs.) and sophomore
Jacob Vasquez (165 lbs.) both went 2-2 in the tournament. Sophomore
Carlos Almanza (157 lbs.) went 1-2, while sophomore
Gael Garcia (125 lbs.) ended up 0-2 on the day.
Cloud County will open dual action on Wednesday, November 12 when the T-Birds head to Beatrice, Nebraska to take on Southeast Community College and Murray State College. The opening bout against Murray State will begin at 5 pm. The T-Birds will then wrestle Southeast Community College at 7 pm.
