PRATT, Kan. – Fresh off a pair of home dual victories on Wednesday night and looking to close out the regular season with momentum heading into postseason action next weekend, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team secured a winning record in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference dual action with a 36-15 neutral-site victory over Neosho County Community College inside the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena on the campus of Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas on Thursday, February 1st.
Finishing the dual season with a 7-8 overall dual record and 4-3 mark in the KJCCC with four straight dual wins to close out the 2023-24 regular season. During the four dual winning streak, CCCC beat opponents by an average of 29 points per dual while scoring over 30 points in all four duals.
Giving up open weights at 141 pounds and 285 pounds, Cloud County spotted the Panthers 12 points to begin the match while being given 12 points of their own by the Panthers as NCCC was open at 125 pounds and 197 pounds. With the first match of the night taking place at 133 pounds, freshman
Daniel Vines did not need much time in landing a first-period fall over Teyton Burns with a takedown 15 seconds into the match leading to a fall with 2:28 left in the first period to put Cloud County out in front 12-0 on the scoreboard. Following the first open weight forfeit by the T-Birds, Neosho picked up a 6-4 decision win at 149 pounds as
Tarik Adkins got out to a 4-1 lead before giving up a third-period escape, takedown, and riding time point to drop a match to Jace Tapia to bring the score to 12-9 in favor of the T-Birds.
Winning each of the next five matches including the open weight forfeit at 197 pounds, Cloud County got a 16-0 technical fall from
Dylan Ancheta at 157 pounds followed by an 8-1 decision win for
Easton Boone at 165 pounds as the lead was pushed back out to 20-9 heading into the 174-pound match. Back-to-back technical falls were scored by
Macallistair Chambers (18-2) and
Wyatt Powell (20-5) to give CCCC another 10 points toward the team score with Cloud County taking their largest lead of the dual at 36-9. With 285 pounds being a forfeit by the T-Birds, Neosho earned their final six team points despite winning just one of the six contest matches with Cloud County earning a 21-point victory to improve to 5-2 all-time against the Panthers.
What's Next?
Cloud County will have the next nine days to prepare for the 2024 NJCAA South-Central District Championship Tournament which will be hosted in Great Bend, Kansas by Barton Community College. The 10-team district will be the final event of the season before the 2024 NJCAA Wrestling Championships as CCCC will look to have wrestlers qualify for the National Tournament that is set to take place March 1 and 2 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
