Cloud County Women's Basketball Opens Conference Play with 57-53 Wn Over Seward County

Box Score The Cloud County Community College women's basketball team secured a 57-53 home win over Seward County in its Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opener on Wednesday, November 20 at Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

The T-Birds remain undefeated and improve to 6-0 with the victory. With the win, Cloud County has won three straight home games against the Saints, dating back to 2022.

Cloud County led 24-18 at halftime. Seward County put together a 7-2 run to open the second-half, capped off by a three-pointer by redshirt sophomore guard Kylee Hunt to trail 26-25 with 8:01 to play in the third quarter. The T-Birds quickly extended their lead back to eight points on a free-throw by sophomore guard TiAna Davis, back-to-back buckets by freshman forward Lilliana Petersen, and a three-pointer by freshman guard Bre Frazier. Sophomore wing Darcy Lierz also netted a three in the third period and Cloud County led 44-38 entering the fourth quarter.

The T-Birds led by as many as nine points in the final frame after Petersen drained a triple with 8:26 to play. Seward County responded with a 13-4 run, pulling even at 53-53 on a three-pointer by sophomore Biyyanah Ellis with 41 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, the T-Birds regained the lead on a drive and finish by Davis with 16.7 seconds to go. Frazier then blocked a three-point attempt by freshman Maddy Kincaid. Following a defensive rebound, Frazier was fouled by Ellis with 3 seconds to play. Frazier connected on both free-throw attempts to secure the win.

Nine different players scored for the T-Birds, led by Davis with 13 points. Petersen and freshman forward Talasia Thomas were right behind Davis with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Frazier turned in a nine point, seven rebound and four assist performance. Petersen also had seven rebounds. Thomas and freshman forward Shea Wurtz had three steals each.

Cloud County combined to shoot 18-of-51 (35.3 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-16 (25.0 percent) from long range, and 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) from the free-throw line. The T-Birds edged the Saints in points off turnovers (20-17) and points in the paint (26-10). Seward County did outrebound Cloud County 45-37, including 25-14 on the offensive glass.

Cloud County will make its first road trip of the conference season on Saturday, November 23 for a 1 pm meeting with Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas.
