Cloud County Splits Home Matches, Sweeps Central Christian JV

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Cloud County Community College volleyball team snapped its losing streak and split its home matches on Wednesday, October 23 inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

In the opener, the T-Birds defeated Central Christian College JV by set scores of 25-9, 25-7, 25-19. In the final match of the day, Central Community College edged Cloud County in five sets, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 14-16.

In their match against the Central Community College JV Tigers, Cloud County jumped out to an 8-0 lead in set one and 13-0 advantage in set two before winning the games by 16 points and 18 points, respectively. The Tigers rallied and led 5-2 early in set three. The T-Birds countered, tying the match on four separate occasions before climbing in front at 13-9 following kills by Bradie Medina and Tori Sanders and an ace by Beatrice Giusti. A kill by Grace Rowland put Cloud ahead by seven points late before the T-Birds eventually settled for the six point win.

Freshman Carlie Carlgren had a team-high 12 kills. Medina had eight kills and seven digs. Rowland chipped in seven kills, eight digs and two block assists. Sophomore Kloë Waymel and freshmen Savana Krupicka and Tori Sanders each added three kills. Waymel also had five digs. Sanders tallied one solo block and two block assists. Krupicka collected 16 assists and five digs. Freshman Maria Clara Lopes Miranda finished with 12 assists and four digs.

Cloud County was led defensively by Giusti who had 12 digs. Freshman Berkleigh Curtis had five digs. Sophomore Ashley Suter added three digs.

In the evening finale, Cloud County came out of the gates firing, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-22. Central Community College would not lie down, using a 6-2 spurt to go up 12-6 in the third set. The T-Birds struggled to close the gap, at one point trimming Central's lead down to five at 14-9, before being outscored 11-7 the rest of the way. Central used a 9-4 run early in the fourth frame to once again separate themselves. The Raiders led by as many as six points before Cloud County fought back to make it a two-point game late at 24-22. The T-Birds could not get closer, falling 25-22. Playing in a fifth set for the second time in eight days, Cloud County gained a 13-10 advantage following a kill by Carlgren and back-to-back aces by Medina. The Raiders countered, scoring six of the next seven points to take the overall match victory.

Medina and Rowland both led the way for Cloud County with 21 kills each. Medina also posted a team-high 31 digs for her 17th double-double of the season. Rowland added nine digs and one block assist. Carlgren finished with nine kills and four digs, while May had six kills, four digs and three block assists.

Krupicka tallied a career-high 48 assists.

Defensively, four T-Birds had double-digit digs. Joining Medina were Suter with 16, Giusti with 15, and Curtis with 14.

Waymel added five block assists. Medina also had five blocks, including one solo block.

Cloud County will be back in action on Saturday, October 26 as the T-Birds continue Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play against Butler. First serve is scheduled for 2 pm.
