CONCORDIA, Kan. – Dropping just one match out of eight contested bouts while winning three in bonus point fashion, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team cruised their way to a 34-3 home dual victory over Cowley Community College inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 24th.
Improving to 4-8 overall, Cloud County earns a second-straight win over Cowley following a 26-21 dual win last season while the Tigers drop their first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference dual of the season to fall to 6-6 overall.
Bouncing back from a 14-9 defeat on Monday night, 125-pound wrestler
Brady Foster for Cloud County started the night off in a big way for the T-Birds against Beau Murphy by reversing an early takedown followed by a three-point near fall and two stalling calls to grab a 6-3 lead after three minutes of wrestling. Deferring his choice to the third period, Foster was hit with a penalty point for three consecutive cautions to start the second period in the top position but was able to turn Murphy for a four-point near fall followed by another stalling penalty point to grab a commanding 9-4 lead heading into the third. Choosing the bottom position and adding an escape to go up 10-4, Foster once again became aggressive to earn three takedowns in the final period with the final takedown coming with 17 seconds left to end the match with a 21-6 technical fall victory.
Both teams were open at 133 pounds for a double-forfeit followed by
Collin Smith wrestling for the first time in two weeks at 141 pounds against Ryker Agee as the Gardner, Kansas native scored a takedown and four-point near fall in the opening minute before ending his match 1:23 into the contest with a fall.
Tarik Adkins followed things at 149 pounds by battling through a scoreless opening period against Chase Koehler before scoring a reversal and takedown in the second to hold a 5-1 lead heading into the third. Working to protect his advantage, Adkins allowed an escape to Koehler before earning another takedown to go up 8-2 as Koehler only managed to score an additional escape and takedown to drop an 8-6 decision.
A second open weight for Cowley came at 157 pounds to give sophomore
Dylan Ancheta a forfeit win that put CCCC up 20-0 heading into the 165-pound match where
Easton Boone squared off with Jacen Jackson and started the match with a 1-0 hole after being issued a penalty for not having his headgear ready when entering the mat. Overcoming the penalty by scoring a takedown for his first lead of the match, Boone eventually was reversed in the opening period to have things all tied up heading to the second where Jackson chose the bottom position to begin the period. Boone once again saw a reversal followed by a stalling warning giving Jackson a 5-3 advantage heading to the third. After a minute of injury time for Boone that allowed Jackson to once again choose his starting position, Boone had to become aggressive after giving up another reversal by scoring a reversal of his own followed by a four-point near fall to go up 9-7. Another stalling warning that was gladly taken by Boone brought Jackson within one, but it allowed enough time for Boone to run out the clock as a riding time advantage put the final score at 10-8 in favor of Cloud County to add to their dual lead and go up 23-0.
With
Macallistair Chambers wrestling at 174 pounds, a high-scoring opening period saw Salina, Kansas native score two takedowns along with a four-point and two-point near fall to hold a 12-1 lead going into the second. Not wasting any time in the ensuing two minutes, Chambers gave up an escape after seeing Daniel Stephens of Cowley choose the bottom starting position before adding two more takedowns to go up 15 and end the match with an 18-3 technical fall.
Wyatt Powell followed things up at 184 pounds with the closest match of the night against Bryce Goucher as both wrestlers managed a takedown and escape to keep things locked at 4-4 going to the second before a stalling warning on Powell being the only action over the next two minutes. With the match still up for grabs in the third, Powell used his starting position choice to earn an escape and grab a 5-4 lead while also having a riding time advantage that was closing in on being locked before scoring a takedown. Things became interesting late as Goucher managed to score a reversal and nearly score back points before seeing Powell work back his stomach as one final stalling call brought the score within one at 8-7 before having time run out to give Powell the win.
Another closely contested match followed at 197 pounds with
D.J. Gillins taking on Lewis Caples of Cowley with Caples earning a takedown after an aggressive start that did not lead to any scoring for Gillins. Managing to earn an escape before the period expired, Gillins chose bottom position to start the second to get back within a point before scoring his first takedown of the match to go up 5-3 before getting called for a locked hands call that followed by a Caples reversal. Needing to get aggressive once more, Gillins was forced to allow an escape to Caples after starting in the top position to trail 7-5 while facing another potential point in favor of Caples coming from riding time. Scoring a takedown to more or less tie things up at 8-8 when factoring in riding time, Gillins saw Caples land another escape to force the Lakeland, Florida native to be in a must-score position which he would do with a takedown in the final 20 seconds to secure an 11-9 victory.
Cowley's lone win came at 285 pounds with Stefaan Fearon taking on Cloud County's
Gavin Nutting with 13-2 deficit for Nutting after one period of action allowing the Tiger wrestler to work passively around the mat. Needing to score, Nutting was unable to do so until the third period with an escape before being taken down once more as the match ended in a 17-4 major decision win for Fearon before seeing Cowley issued a one-point team deduction for unsportsmanlike conduct.
