MIAMI, Okla. – Finishing up a five dual weekend with two Saturday duals, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team split a pair of duals with Otero Junior College and 19th-ranked Rochester Technical and Community College at the 2024 NJCAA Coaches Duals inside the Student Activities Center in Miami, Oklahoma on Saturday, January 13th.
Through eight duals this season, Cloud County is now 3-5 overall with seven duals still scheduled within the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. CCCC's win over Otero was a 35-11 victory while the defeat to Rochester Tech saw a final score of 38-7 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Against Otero Junior College:
With both teams having an open weight within the first four weight classes, both Cloud County and Otero found themselves tied at 11-11 through 149 pounds as the T-Birds saw 133-pound wrestler
Daniel Vines earn a 16-1 technical fall win before the Rattlers earned a 17-0 technical fall at 141 pounds. Breaking the tie was 157-pound wrestler
Dylan Ancheta with a 14-3 major decision win for the T-Birds followed by a 25-9 technical fall for
Erik Darling as CCCC took a 20-11 lead heading into the final four matches. Grabbing a 9-1 lead after one period of action, 174-pound wrestler
Wyatt Powell was able to hold off a late comeback from Joseph Shaver to win 13-8 as the win secured a dual victory for the T-Birds with the Rattlers being open at both 184 pounds and 197 pounds. Following the forfeit win at 184 pounds for Cloud County, neither team secured any points at 197 pounds with both teams being open as the final match saw
Gavin Nutting of Cloud County score the lone fall of the dual with a first-period pin just 1:25 into the match.
Against Rochester Tech:
Taking on a historically strong Yellow Jacket squad for the first time in program history, Cloud County was only able to earn two victories of the eight contested matches as RCTC fielded a wrestler at all 10 weight classes while seeing CCCC open at 149 pounds and 197 pounds. A tightly contested opening match at 125 pounds saw Cloud County's
Nolan Bradley jump out to a 9-0 lead before allowing an escape and takedown to make the score 9-4 after one period of action with the score tightening to 10-6 heading into the third. A takedown with 43 seconds left by Rochester's Keiichi Kong along with riding time tied the match at 10-10 to force sudden victory overtime with Kong securing one final takedown to earn the 13-10 win and put the Yellow Jackets up 3-0.
Ninth-ranked Tyson Wilson for Rochester then picked up a 12-6 win over Vines for RCTC's second win of the dual followed by a first-period fall at 141 pounds as CCCC suddenly found themselves trailing 18-0 heading into the 157-pound match. Another ranked wrestler for the Yellow Jackets in fifth-ranked Gavin Gust led to a 19-2 technical fall for Rochester followed by another late comeback from 165-pound wrestler Leo Tukhlynovych of RCTC as
Easton Boone saw a 7-5 lead heading into the third period erased by an escape and takedown with 28 seconds left to fall by a score of 9-7. Getting the T-Birds on the board was
Macallistair Chambers with an 11-4 victory at 174 pounds in his only action of the day to finish 2-0 after earning an open weight forfeit against Otero which was followed by a 15-2 major decision win for Powell over Ayden Goettzinger at 184 pounds. The Yellow Jackets added another six points from the open weight forfeit at 197 pounds to go up 32-7 and ended the dual with a second-period fall at 285 pounds for the 31-point victory.
What's Next?
After having last week's KJCCC opening duals at Pratt postponed to January 22nd, Cloud County will now host their first two duals of the season as part of a KJCCC tri-dual on Wednesday, January 17th when number 10 ranked Northwest Kansas Technical College and number 11 ranked Labette Community College come to Arley Bryant Gymnasium. A total of three duals will take place, with Labette taking on Northwest Tech at 4 PM followed by Cloud County against Labette at approximately 5:30 PM. The final dual of the evening will feature Cloud County against Northwest Kansas Tech and is scheduled for a 7 PM start time with all duals going on a rolling schedule based on the finish of the previous dual.
