Errors Prove Costly For CCCC Volleyball In Home Defeat To Hutchinson

CONCORDIA, Kan. – 17 attack errors and 10 service errors by the Cloud County Community College volleyball team would give visiting Hutchinson Community College free points throughout the night as part of a 25-14, 25-18, 25-19 home defeat inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Wednesday, September 6th.

Dropping their second-straight match inside the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, Cloud County falls to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in the KJCCC while the Blue Dragons become the lone unbeaten team in conference play while improving to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Errors aplenty from both sides would begin the match as the first five points of the opening set would come by attack errors with the T-Birds jumping out to a 3-2 lead before finally managing to break the streak of errors with a kill by sophomore Jacey Schurle. A 7-2 run by Hutchinson would follow to force CCCC into an early timeout while trailing 9-6 as the HCC offense would begin to find its groove with four kills coming during the run. Regaining serve out of the timeout with a Madison Ronnebaum kill, Cloud County would see the Blue Dragons quickly regain control with three straight points while going on an 8-1 run that would break things open and give Hutchinson a 17-8 lead. Trying to climb back into the set with a 4-2 spurt to bring the score to 19-12, CCCC would see another large run by HCC begin with four straight points as part of a set-ending 6-2 run to end things at 25-14.

Taking the set one momentum and carrying it over into the second, Hutchinson would jump out to a 5-2 lead thanks to two T-Bird errors, two service aces, and a kill on the offensive end before seeing CCCC rattle off three-straight points to pull back even at 5-5 and get the home crowd back into the set. Adding to the run would be Cloud County with a Hutchinson error and Doga Eski kill to cap off a 5-0 run that would force the Blue Dragons to use an early timeout with the score sitting at 7-5 in favor of the T-Birds. The timeout would prove productive for HCC as the Blue Dragons would score each of the next four points to reclaim the lead at 9-7 but once again see a spurt from Cloud County lead to three-straight CCCC points to put things at a 10-9 T-Bird lead. Returning the favor with a 3-0 spurt of their own, the Blue Dragons would grab a 12-10 lead and manage to start building their advantage with a larger 7-3 run to go up 13-13 by taking advantage of unforced Cloud County errors. After CCCC get a Bradie Medina kill to stop the run by Hutchinson, HCC would put together another 3-0 rally that would start to put separation between the two squads as the T-Birds never would be able to recover down the stretch while seeing the Blue Dragons pull away for a 25-18 set two victory.

Another slow start for CCCC in the third would see Hutchinson score four of the first five points and five of the first seven as another 5-2 deficit would this time remain in favor of the Blue Dragons throughout the first 12 points of the set with HCC going up 8-4 following back-to-back T-Bird errors. Putting together three-straight points to pull back within one at 8-7, Cloud County would see an attack error slow the rally as Hutchinson would manage to go on a 7-1 run that would turn an 8-7 contest into a 15-8 Blue Dragon lead that would create problems for CCCC. The Blue Dragon lead would manage to remain in the five-to-seven-point range over the next several points of the set as Cloud County would be unable to string together more than two points on any given potential rally. Finally managing to pull within four at 18-14, CCCC would be unable to get any closer the rest of the way as a 3-0 HCC run would push the lead back out to seven at 21-14 with Hutchinson eventually closing out the match with a six-point set victory.

The 17 attack errors would lead to Cloud County hitting just .077 for the match with 25 kills coming on 104 total attacks while seeing Hutchinson hit .186 for the match in addition to nine service aces on the offensive end. One bright spot for the T-Birds would be holding Hutchinson to just three total blocks on the night after seeing the Blue Dragons enter the evening by averaging over 2.5 blocks per set.

Individually, Schurle would lead CCCC with seven kills on the offensive end as part of a .417 attack percentage despite being limited to just 12 total attacks to go along with four total blocks. Providing a team-high 14 set assists would be Katelynn Brogan to go along with three kills and eight digs as Brette Doile would be the team leader in digs with nine. Hutchinson would be led by a match-high 12 kills from Taniya Golden who would finish as the lone player in the match to reach double-figure kills.

What's Next?
CCCC begins a three-match road swing within the KJCCC beginning on Friday, September 8th when the trip commences with a 5:30 PM matchup at Garden City. The Broncbusters are 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the KJCCC following a five-set defeat on the road Wednesday night against Seward County with four of the five sets being decided by four points or less.
