SALINA, Kan. – Highlighted by the sophomore
Ibrahim Ameer setting the single-season win record, the best team conference finish, and the first-ever win over Cowley in program history, the number-17 ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team would close out their 2022-23 dual season at the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference duals inside the Salina Fieldhouse in Salina, Kansas on Sunday, January, 29th.
The T-Birds would drop a 44-6 decision to fourth-ranked Pratt to open the day before bouncing back with a 26-21 victory over Cowley in their first two duals of the day. CCCC would then fall by a score of 30-17 to Labette Community College before losing to Neosho by criteria after the match would end in a 27-27 tie with the third criteria (match points) favoring the Panthers by a 6-3 margin.
Ending the dual season with an 10-7 overall record, Cloud County finishes with a 4-3 mark in the KJCCC this season to finish with their first winning dual record in the program's sixth-year history along with a program-best third-place finish in the KJCCC standings.
Against Pratt:
Starting the day off with a battle between KJCCC division champions, number-four ranked Pratt would win nine of the 10 matches in the dual with ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds, 133 pounds, 149 pounds, 157 pounds, and 165 pounds leading the Beavers to five of their nine victories. The lone match victory for Cloud County in the dual would come from Ameer with a first-period fall over Kaden Glass at the 2:02 mark of the opening period for his 30th win of the season and 50th career victory as a T-Bird. The 30 wins in 2022-23 would tie a single-season record with current CCCC assistant coach
Blayne Harris as Ameer would have three more opportunities throughout the day to break the record.
Against Cowley:
Scoring victories in four of the first six matches of the dual, Cloud County would build a 20-9 lead before going on to earn a pair of decisions in two of the final four matches to secure their first victory of the day. Opening the dual with an 11-0 major decision victory by
Brady Foster over Ayden Montez at 125 pounds, the Tigers would come back with a 6-0 decision at 133 pounds and a second-period fall at 141 pounds to take their first and only lead of the dual. Putting the T-Birds back on top would be
Salvador Barintas at 149 pounds as a second-period fall would put CCCC up by a 10-9 score before an open weight for the Cowley would allow
Dylan Ancheta to put six more team points on the board for Cloud County.
Gabriel Bailey would continue the strong start for the T-Birds by earning a 14-0 major decision for his third major decision victory of the year. Cowley would get a first-period fall at 174 pounds before giving up a 15-10 decision at 184 pounds with Tommy Rogers knocking off Lewis Caples to set the stage for Ameer who would defeat Kanden Young 9-4 to set the single-season school record for wins. The Tigers would score a win in the final match of the dual with a third-period takedown by fifth-ranked Dean Setticase leading to an injury default victory to end the dual.
Against Labette:
In what would wind up being a dual between the two teams that would finish tied for second in the conference, it would be Labette taking six of the nine contested matches in the dual to go along with an open weight forfeit by the T-Birds at 285 pounds to wind up earning a 30-17 victory. All three of CCCC's victories would come with bonus points as Foster would earn a 16-1 technical fall upset of ninth-ranked Dalton Kivett at 125 pounds to get Cloud County on the board before having to wait until the 184-pound match to see their next win. In the 184-pound match, it would be Tommy Rogers making quick work of Jonathan Edwards for a fall just 45 seconds into the match before seeing Ameer pick up his second fall of the day just past the halfway point of the first period.
Against Neosho:
A tightly-contested dual throughout would see no team hold a lead by more than nine points in addition to neither team winning more than two matches in a row to set up a five-all tie in matches won. Four of Cloud County's five victories would come by fall with
Bray Skinner (133 pounds), Ancheta (157 pounds),
Wyatt Powell (184 pounds), and Ameer all earning first-period falls in their respective matches. The T-Birds would also get a 3-2 decision victory from Bailey at 165 pounds in their lone other event victory while Neosho would get a decision at 125 to go along with falls at 141 pounds, 149 pounds, 174 pounds, and an open-weight forfeit at 285 pounds. With the score tied at 27-27 at the conclusion of the dual, criteria would be needed to determine a winner with the first criteria (matches won) and second criteria (falls, forfeits, defaults, and disqualifications) keeping things remained tied. In the third criteria (match points in matches that went a full seven minutes), Neosho would be declared the winner by way of having six match points compared to just three for Cloud County.
