T-Bird Volleyball Splits Saturday Action In Dodge City Triangular

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Closing out the weekend out west, the Cloud County Community College volleyball team would split a pair of matches by falling to Dodge City Community College in five sets before bouncing back to sweep Lamar Community College in three sets at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City, Kansas on Saturday, September 18th.

The split leaves the T-Birds with an 8-7 overall record while falling to 0-5 in Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play while the Conquistadors improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in KJCCC action following their first of two matches on Saturday. Lamar dropped to 3-15 overall following their match with Cloud County with a match against Dodge City remaining on Saturday night.

Opening the afternoon with conference action, CCCC would jump out to an early 1-0 lead with an impressive 25-16 set one victory over the Conquistadors as Cloud County would go on a late run to break open what was a two-point set to win by nine. It would be all Dodge City in the second set as DC3 would score 10 of the first 11 points of the set to go up 10-1 and never look back to take a 25-12 decision and knot things up at 1-1. Each of the next two sets would then be decided by two points as the T-Birds and Conquistadors would take 25-23 decisions with Dodge City winning the third set and Cloud County taking a must-win fourth set to send things to a decisive fifth set. In the fifth set, CCCC and DC3 would trade points back and forth to put things at 13-13 all before the final two points would go the way of the host Conquistadors to pull out a 15-13 set victory to pull out the home win.

Finishing with just a .149 attack percentage, Cloud County would tally 38 kills on 141 attack attempts while committing 17 attack errors. Second-year freshman Lakyn Tenbrink would finish as the lone T-Bird in double-figure kills with 10 while Kenzie Cooper would notch a career-best nine kills. Hollie Stewart would add eight kills on 13 attempts and no attack errors to finish with a .615 attack percentage as all eight kills would come in the final two sets of action.
