Cloud County Baseball Season Ends In Region VI Sub-Regional Round

LIBERAL, Kan. – Postseason play would mark the end of the road on the 2021 season for the Cloud County Community College baseball team following a 16-9 loss to Kansas City Kansas Community College followed by a 24-10, seven-inning defeat to host Seward County Community College in the 2021 NJCAA Region VI Seward County Sub-Regional held at Brent Gould Field in Liberal, Kansas on Friday, May 14th.

The losses end the season for the T-Birds with a 28-24 overall record while the Blue Devils would finish the weekend in Liberal with a perfect 3-0 record to finish as Seward County sub-regional champions and advance to the NJCAA Plains District Tournament in Salina, Kansas. Host Seward County would drop their next game of the weekend to Neosho following their win over CCCC to bow out of the sub-regional with a 26-25 overall record to end the year.

Against KCKCC:
Jumping out on the Blue Devils early, Cloud County would turn the first pitch of the game into a solo home run from Jaden Parsons as CCCC would manage to hold a 1-0 lead after the first inning of action. The T-Birds would then use a one-out walk to start a two-out rally as Willie Ponce and Parsons would collect back-to-back RBI hits to score two more runs and make it 3-0 in the top of the second. Looking for more, an Ian Riley walk and Noah Olson two-RBI double would keep the rally going as the inning would officially see Cloud County push across five runs on four hits and knock Kansas City Kansas starter Logan Barnard from the contest after just 1.2 innings.

The 6-0 lead for Cloud County would be cut into in the bottom of the second as the Blue Devils would use back-to-back solo home runs to begin the inning to get a pair of runs back and make it 6-2 heading to the third. Retired in order for the first time in the game, the T-Birds would then see KCKCC strike for three runs on three hits including a two-run home run as the once six-run lead would be cut to just a single run.

With momentum now clearly with Kansas City Kansas, the Blue Devils would strike for three more runs in the fourth as Cloud County would have trouble figuring out KCKCC reliever Chase Terrell. Trailing 8-6 heading to the sixth, CCCC would finally manage to get back in the scoring column by pushing across a run on a Parsons RBI double before seeing the game-tying run cut down at the plate on the same play.

It would be a short-lived one-run deficit however as KCKCC would add three more runs to their total in their half of the sixth to go up by an 11-7 margin before adding another five runs in the seventh to take a nine-run lead. Cloud County would only manage a two-run home run from Olson in the top of the ninth to plate two final runs as a late rally would never come to fruition for CCCC.

Strong outings from both Parsons and Olson would go spoiled as the duo would combine for six of Cloud County's 11 hits and seven of the nine runs driven in by the T-Birds. Each would have a home run in the game and wind up recording six of the seven extra-base hits by Cloud County as Ponce would finish as the only other player for CCCC to have multiple hits.

Against Seward County:
Facing elimination against sub-regional host Seward County in the Friday nightcap, the T-Birds would find themselves in an 8-0 hole after two innings that CCCC never would be able to recover from. After allowing a single-run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, the Saints would send 10 batters to the plate with all seven who didn't record an out coming around to score. The big blow to the inning would come with three runners on as a 5-0 Cloud County deficit would turn into an 8-0 deficit on one swing of the bat courtesy of a three-run home run for SCCC.

Needing to get some offense going to give themselves a chance to get back into the game, CCCC would respond with two runs in the top of the third as a Jose Luna leadoff single and Trevor Stevens double would put a pair of runners in scoring position for the top of the lineup. After a strikeout and RBI groundout would bring home the first run of the game for the T-Birds, Cloud County would get an RBI single from Noah Olson to push across a second run before seeing the inning end with two runners stranded.

The offense attack of Seward would carry over into the bottom of the third as the Saints would see the two runs put up by Cloud County in the top half of the inning and respond with five of their own as Cloud County would seemingly be unable to come up with any kind of response to stop the outburst by the Saints. Neither team would be able to score in the fourth to leave things at a 13-2 deficit for Cloud County as the T-Birds would have one of their most productive innings of the game in the top of the fifth.

A one-out rally would get started with a Garrett Redden walk and Willie Ponce double to put a pair of runners in scoring position before a strikeout would put CCCC in danger of stranding another pair of runners. Adler Pierson would come through with a clutch two-RBI double down the left field line to score both Redden and Ponce as Luna would keep things going with an RBI double of his own. The three runs would pull Cloud County back within eight at 13-5 as the game would head to the bottom of the fifth.

The scoring explosion on both sides would be far from over as SCCC would once again have a response to outmatch the three runs put up by Cloud County to score four of their own in their half of the fifth. Seward County would then make a pitching change to start the top of the sixth which would be to the benefit of CCCC as the T-Birds would use two hits, two hit batters, two walks, and an error to produce five runs and cut into the Saint lead once more.

With the game now at a 17-10 Seward county lead, the Saints would make one final push to put the game out of reach as a two-out rally would see three hits, three walks, and two hit batters all occur following a pair of strikeouts to start the inning as SCCC would plate seven runs and take their largest lead of the game at 24-10. With the game in jeopardy of ending early due to the Saints being up more than 10 runs in the seventh inning, Cloud County would go down in order to see their season officially end.

Cloud County's 10 runs would come on 14 hits and five walks as CCCC would strand 10 runners and strike out nine times in the game. Five different players would have two hits each including a two-hit, three-RBI performance from Pierson as Ponce, Pierson, Luna, and Stevens would all have an extra-base hit in the game.
