T-Bird Women End Season In Opening Round Of NJCAA Region VI Tournament

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Jumping out to an 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team would manage to score just 25 points in the final 30 minutes of play to see their 2020-21 season come to an end in the opening round of the NJCAA Region VI Tournament with a 63-43 road loss at Garden City Community College inside of Conestoga Arena in Garden City, Kansas on Monday, April 5th.

Scoring a season-low in points, Cloud County ends their year with a 10-12 overall record while Garden City avenges a loss from March 1st against the T-Birds to improve to 13-10 overall and advance to Wednesday's NJCAA Region VI Tournament Quarterfinal round at number-nine ranked Butler Community College who received a first-round bye in the tournament.

Points would be hard to come by in the opening minutes as the free-throw line would account for three of the first five points in the game as CCCC would take an early 3-2 lead just over two minutes into the contest. A Le'Yanna McGinnis jumper would get the T-Birds going offensively as Cloud County would go on a 10-1 run to turn their one-point lead into a nine-point lead at 12-3 with 3:12 left in the opening quarter. CCCC would extend their lead to double digits just over a minute later as Cloud County would score the final six points of the period after seeing GCCC get within seven to grab an 18-5 lead heading to the second.

Holding their double-digit advantage throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter, Cloud County would keep the Broncbusters at bay before taking their largest lead of the game at 26-12 with 4:03 remaining in the first half. Garden City would respond with a quick bucket just 14 seconds later as the T-Birds would score one more bucket before seeing GCCC score nine straight to get within five with just 13 seconds left in the half. Needing a response to try and fight off some of the changing momentum, Cloud County would close out the half with a driving Rori Cox layup in the final two seconds to put the lead at 30-23 as the once 14-point lead would be cut in half at the break.

Seven straight points by Garden City in the opening 2:02 of the second half would allow the Broncbusters to tie things up at 30-30 as GCCC would cap off an 11-0 run at the 6:46 mark of the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 34-30. CCCC would get on the board in the second half with a free throw from Cox, but still be left in search of their first field goal of the half as Garden city would continue their run to score the next 10 to go up 44-31 with 2:23 remaining in the quarter. Branda Boakye would finally get a bucket for Cloud County to fall in the final two minutes of the quarter as the two teams would trade the final eight points of the period to put things at a 48-35 GCCC lead heading to the fourth.

Scoring woes would continue for CCCC in the final 10 minutes of action as Garden City would manage to score five of the first seven points of the quarter while holding Cloud County to just a single field goal in the first four-plus minutes of the quarter. The struggles coupled with three-point attempts starting to fall on Garden City's end would allow the Broncbusters to take their largest lead of the game in the final minutes as a T-Bird basket in the final 1:05 would be the final points of the game with GCCC defending their home court in the postseason.

Connecting on 12 of their 17 total field goals in the first half, CCCC would finish the game with a 34.0 percent (17-of-50) performance from the field while going just eight-of-16 (50.0 percent) from the free-throw line. Garden City would hold a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint and outscore CCCC 27-8 in bench points to go along with a 37-29 advantage in rebounds.

The lone scorer to reach double-figures for Cloud County in the contest would be McGinnis who would end her T-Bird career with 15 points and eight rebounds while Sydni Keys would add nine points, three steals, and four rebounds. Both Idalis Lee and Isabella Vazquez would score four points off the bench while Garden City would get a game-high 16 points from Donetria McGee.
