CONCORDIA, Kan. - The Cloud County Community College softball team was in action at home on Thursday afternoon as the T-Birds would drop a pair of games by scores of 12-2 and 17-0 to number-13 nationally-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College at the CCCC Softball Field in Concordia, Kansas.
Additionally, CCCC's next scheduled games for the T-Birds at Fort Scott have on Saturday have been postponed due to expected rainfall on Friday and will now be played as a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 27th.
The losses drop Cloud County to 6-20 overall and 1-19 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Blue Devils have now won eight of their last 10 games to improve to 33-9 overall and 14-6 in the KJCCC.
Game One:
Giving up two runs on three hits in the top of the first and a third run on a single hit in the top of the second, Cloud County would put their first runner of the game on in the bottom of the second with a
Rae Ann Hartwig one-out double but see the run get stranded at third as the Blue Devils would manage to hold onto their three-run lead. A solo home run in the top of the next inning would make things 4-0 KCKCC as Cloud County would manage to break through in the bottom half of the inning by using a pair of infield singles and sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners with one out. After a
Kayla Lee stolen base, a fielder's choice would see all runners on the play safe to load the bases as three-hole hitter
Taylor Glause would get Cloud County on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly. CCCC would be unable to do anything else however in the inning as the remaining two runners would be stranded to end the inning.
Kansas City Kansas would waste no time getting the run back in the fourth to reclaim their four-run lead as the game would remain at a 5-1 score until the top of the seventh. With the game still within reach going into the final inning, the T-Birds would see the KCKCC offense come alive in the final inning as seven hits and two errors would lead to seven runs to come across and put out any potential chance at a comeback as Cloud County would only manage an RBI single from Lee to score
Kelsey Bohnsack in their final at-bat.
CCCC's two runs would come on eight hits as Lee and Glause would have the only two runs driven in for the T-Birds with Bohnsack scoring both times. Bohnsack would also be one of two Cloud County players to finish with two hits in the game, joining Lee who added a stolen base.
Game Two:
Offensive struggles would continue for the T-Birds into the second game as what would start out as a scoreless duel through two innings would be broken open in the top of the third by Kansas City Kansas. A two-run home run with one out in the third would give KCKCC their first lead of the game as a single run in the fourth would push the deficit for Cloud County to 3-0. After getting a one-out infield single in the bottom of the first, the T-Birds would go without a baserunner in the second, third, and fourth innings before finally having
Delaney Exon reach on an error in the fifth. Unable to do anything else in the inning, Cloud County would see the Blue Devils tack on two more runs on three hits in the sixth and then in a similar fashion to game one have a big inning in their final at-bat as 10 hits and a hit batter would allow KCKCC to push across 11 runs in the inning with a grand slam capping off the game as Cloud County would muster just one hit in their final at-bat.
Shayna Fila and Hartwig would account for the lone hits for CCCC as the T-Birds would have just three runners in the game reach base. KCKCC on the other hand would pound out 22 hits and draw four walks while leaving 11 runners on base as part of their offensive display.
