T-Bird Softball Sweeps Southeast To Improve to 5-1

CONCORDIA, Kan. – Taking advantage of eight errors in two games, the Cloud County Community College softball team would pick up a 10-2, five-inning game one and 9-6 game two victory to sweep a doubleheader over Southeast Community College at the CCCC Softball Field in Concordia, Kansas on Saturday, March 6th.

Remaining undefeated at home, Cloud County is now off to a 5-1 overall start to the year while the Storm opened their season on Saturday and start the year 0-2.

Game One:
The bats would be hot at the plate early in the opener as Cloud County would score one run on two extra-base hits in the bottom of the first before adding two more runs in the bottom of the third as three hits and an error would stake CCCC to a 3-2 lead heading to the fourth.

Cloud County would work around a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth to maintain their one run lead, and add to it in the bottom half of the inning as a leadoff single from Rae Ann Hartwig would come around to score on a two-out throwing error to make it 4-2 T-Birds. CCCC would then pour it on in the fifth, recording eight consecutive one-out hits to plate six runs and end the game via run-rule.

Hartwig would carry the big bat in game one, going two-for-three in the six-hole while finishing with three RBI and two runs scored. One of her two hits would be a three-run homer as the T-Birds would pound out 14 hits with four going for extra-bases.

Tossing a complete game to earn her second win of the year would be Delaney Miller as the freshman would allow just two runs on six hits while striking out eight batters.

Game Two:
Momentum from game one would carry over into the start of game two for CCCC as the T-Birds would manage to score three runs in two of the first three innings while allowing one run in the first and two in the third to lead 6-3 after three innings. Cloud County would then add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Taylor Glause to score Shayna Fila before seeing the Storm claw their way back with three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within a run at 7-6. Glause would then deliver again in the bottom of the fifth by hitting a two-RBI single to score Kayla Lee and Mackenzie Rowe as Miller would come in to shut down Southeast offensively and give Cloud County their second win of the day.

Following up their 14-hit output in game one, CCCC would finish with 11 hits and also get things done on the base paths in game two as the T-Birds would swipe five bags and draw five walks. A three-for-four performance from Glause would be a team-best for Cloud County as the freshman would drive in four runs and score twice while Hartwig and Delaney Exon would each record two hits.

Getting her third win of the year in the circle would be Kyra Meyer as the Blue Hill, Nebraska native would throw five innings and allow six runs (four earned) on 10 hits while striking out two. Miller would earn her second save of the year by throwing the final two innings of the contest and striking out three of the nine batters she faced.

What's Next?
Cloud County will be off until Thursday, March 11th when the T-Birds are scheduled to travel up to Beatrice, Nebraska to take on the Storm in another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The games are slated to be the final non-conference games for CCCC before Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play begins on March 18th.
