Box Score KEARNEY, Neb. - Coming off thier biggest win of the season against number three nationally-ranked Johnson County Community College, the Cloud County Community College volleyball team would suffer a five set setback to the University of Nebraska-Kearney JV team in non-conference action in Kearney, Nebraska on Friday, September 27th.
The loss marks the first time in 2019 that the T-Birds have dropped a non-conference match, falling to 13-3 overall on the season. Scores of the match would see Cloud County take the first and fourth sets by marks of 25-23 while dropping the second set 25-23, the third set 25-20, and fifth set in extra points 23-21.
Unforced errors would be the biggest issue that CCCC would face in the contest, committing 41 attack errors while also adding 13 service service errors, four ball handling errors, and one block error to give the Lopers numerous points in a match that saw things stay close throughout.
A 19 kill performance from Emelys Martinez would lead Cloud County as four different T-Birds would finish the match in double-digit kills as Dayana Chara would add 16 kills while Geraldyn Palacios recorded 11 kills and Mary Broxterman had 10. Broxterman would also add a defensive presence in the match, putting up four assisted blocks and eight digs while Chara finished with nine digs and five total blocks (three solo blocks).
Freshman setter Jaycee Burghart put up a career-high 52 assists and had 13 digs in the contest while Madi Spencer led the T-Birds in digs with 22. In total, Cloud County would finish the match with 12 blocks but would only have two service aces.
What's Next?
A very quick turnaround will see Cloud County make the hour-long trip down Highway 81 on Saturday morning to take on the Kansas Wesleyan JV team in a non-conference match at 11 a.m. In two matches against the Coyotes last season, the T-Birds would win both at home and on the road in four sets with the first match coming one year to the day tomorrow.
