Cold spell plagues T-Birds in 80-64 road loss to Seward County

Box Score

LIBERAL, Kansas — An 11-minute cold spell in the second half derailed the Cloud County Community College men's basketball team in its 80-64 road loss to Seward County Community College.

The T-Birds (6-13 overall, 4-12 KJCCC), after trailing 31-30 at the half to Seward County (13-7 overall, 9-7 KJCCC), started the second half on a 9-4 burst to own a 39-35 lead with 17:14 remaining following a mid-range jumper by Alvin Thompson.

Unfortunately for Cloud County, the lid on the basket seemingly closed over the next 10 minutes and change.

Seward County capitalized with a 27-4 blitz to extend its lead to 19 at 62-43 with 6:57 remaining.

"We started settling for jump shots," said Cloud County head coach Jordan Altman, referring to that stretch. "We had (Seward County) in the bonus with about 13 minutes to go in the second half and it seemed to be right around that spot that we started to settle and the jump shots weren't falling."

The Saints shot 53 percent from the floor, while the T-Birds finished at a solid 48 percent clip thanks to some late baskets. But by that time turnovers and missed free throws had made the deficit too large to overcome. Cloud County ended the evening with 24 turnovers and were 12-of-26 from the free-throw line.

Seward County also received an exceptional night from its bench as the Saints received 41 points from its reserves.

Redshirt sophomore Ramion Burt Jr. was a bright spot for the T-Birds on Wednesday as he finished with a team-high 18 points on an economical 8-of-10 shooting. He added seven rebounds and three steals.

Joining Burt Jr. in double-figures were Thompson and freshman JaVary Christmas with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

The T-Birds will look to get back in the win column when they close out their four-game road trip at 4 p.m. this Saturday against Pratt Community College.

"We're going to have to play with a lot of energy and focus on our errors," Altman said. "At one point (Wednesday) we were up five then had four straight turnovers to allow Seward County to take the halftime lead. If you do that against Pratt, you won't have a shot because they (Beavers) score so many points it is going to be a race. We have to be prepared to look at our mistakes and make baskets."
