HESSTON, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College baseball team split its triangular with Hesston College and Southwestern Iowa Community College on Sunday.

After dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to Southwestern Iowa to begin the day, the T-Birds (6-5) broke out in the nightcap against Hesston College with a 12-4 victory.

"All day the offense was good. In Game Two, we definitely came out and swung the bats well, threw the first punch and played well because of it," said Cloud County head coach, Eric Gilliland.

Seven different T-Birds combined for the team's 10 hits in the win over Hesston, led by sophomore Jacob Grady, redshirt freshman Casey Garner and freshman Matt Bondarchuk with two hits apiece.

Garner scored three runs from the No. 2 hole spot in the order. Bondarchuk and Grady, who rifled a two-run single in the top of the third inning, each scored two runs as well.

Cloud County put the game away early, scoring all 12 of its runs through the first three innings, including a six-run second inning and a five-run third. That was more than enough run support for sophomore Drew Scrimsher, who picked up his second win of the season with a complete-game effort

The right-hander allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out four on the evening.

"Drew just keeps competing, throwing strikes and getting deep into games for us," Gilliland said. "He's a third-year guy, older than anyone else on the team, and he pitches with that experience… He doesn't have exceptional stuff, but he always competes and gives us a chance."

Cloud put itself in a great position to pick up a pair of victories Sunday as it owned a 5-0 lead in Game One on Southwestern Iowa heading to the bottom of the sixth. Unfortunately for the T-Birds, that's when things began to unravel.

Starting pitcher Nick Wordekemper was exceptional much of the afternoon, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out eight.

He was lifted after giving up two runs in the sixth. Cloud County relievers David Johns and Erick Carrion, each of whom had not allowed an earned run entering the ballgame, were unable to stop the bleeding as Southwestern Iowa rallied for seven runs in the inning to take a 7-5 lead.

"Nick had been really good, but they (Spartans) started to get some comfortable swings off of him and our bullpen has been a strongpoint for us so far this year," Gilliland said. "We turned it over to our two best guys to try and save the four-run lead and the wheels just fell off. I feel like we had the right guys in there, they just didn't do the job they had done all year long. But they're going to get more and more chances because they are good pitchers. It was just one of those days in the back end of the bullpen."

Cloud County will have a quick turnaround as it returns home Monday to host McCook Community College. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
