T-Birds Come Alive in 76-74 Win Over Seward County

The Cloud County men earned a 76-74 upset win over Seward County in an action packed thriller in Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Saturday night. Seward County entered the game at 17-6 and were leading the Jayhawk Conference in scoring. 

Cloud pushed their lead to as much as 16 at one point in the second half at 64-48. Seward County erased the lead as Delano Jones nailed back to back threes and the Saints took a 72-71 lead with 1:29 to play. Demonte Ojinnaka was then fouled and hit one of the two free throws to tie the game at 72. Seward regained possession and the Saints leading scorer, Niem Stevenson, was fouled and went to the line and made both free throws to put Seward back up by two. Cloud's Devonte Dixon was then fouled and also hit both free throws to tie the game back up at 74 with 26 seconds to play. Seward would attempt to hold for the last shot but Aamahne Santos picked off a Seward County pass and was fouled quickly after with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock. Santos nailed both free throws and Cloud held on to win 76-74. 

Cloud burried a season high 14 threes and shot 44.4% from the field in the win. 

Seward County came out with the hot hand knocking down three straight from long range to jump out to a 9-3 lead early on. Cloud responded and took the lead back on a three from Dixon with 13:53 in the half. Stevenson and the Saints rallied back and were up by 11 at 32-21 with 6:39 to play. Cloud County would then storm back and close the half on a 17-0 run to go into the break up 38-32. Santos had nine points during the run. 

The T-Birds continued their momentum into the second half. Cloud took their biggest lead at 64-48 with 8:10 to play. Seward then began their run and battled back in it from there. They used an 18-3 run to get within one at 67-66 with 3:21 to play. The T-Birds and Saints would battle to the very end and Cloud held on to win 76-74.

It was Cloud County's first win since January 2nd when they knocked off Butler County on the road. Cloud had a terrific shooting performance from deep, notably from Santos and Dixon. Dixon nailed five threes and Santos hit four as Cloud connected on a season high 14 three point shots and were 48.3% from three on the night.

Cloud County dominated Seward County on the boards 42-28. The T-Birds were unable to keep the conference's leading scorer in check as Niem Stevenson led all scorers with 26 points.

Santos had perhaps his best performance as a T-Bird with 18 points and 7 assists. The Freshman from Dorchester, MA never came out of the game playing all 40 minutes and capped it with two game winning free throws.

Devonte Dixon continued his hot shooting as he scored a team high 20 points and had 6 rebounds.

Henry Cornelious used a big second half to score 14 points and grab 9 rebounds.

The T-Birds now travel to Hutchinson on Saturday night for a matchup with the first place Blue Dragons.
