Box Score 2 Park City, KS- The Cloud County Thunderbird's season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Championships on Sunday night. The T-Birds sputtered in the second half and lost 69-61 to Butler Community College.
Cloud held a lead for much of the first half but the T-Birds turned the ball over 22 times on the night and hit just eight second half field goals.
The T-Birds fell behind 13-5 early prompting a Chad Eshbaugh timeout. Eshbaugh rallied the T-Birds who came out of the timeout on a 10-1 run to grab their first lead at 15-14 with 9:53 to play in the 1st half.
Cloud and Butler would then trade leads six times to close out the first half. The Grizzlies led the T-Birds 31-29 at half.
Deon Lyle picked up where he left off on Thursday night. He sparked Cloud off the bench in the first half with three first half triples.
Cloud sputtered early on in the second allowing Butler to put space between the two teams. They opened the half on a 7-0 run to go ahead 38-29 with 15:48 to play. The T-Birds committed three turnovers during the run.
Demonte Ojinnaka buried two threes to fuel an 8-0 Cloud run to get back within one at 38-37 with 12:51 to play. Cloud then went without a field goal for the next 8 minutes and 36 seconds allowing Butler to go ahead for good, winning by a final score of 69-61.
Lyle led Cloud off the bench with 17 points. He was 5-9 from three. Lyle hit 13 threes in the two postseason games.
Ojinnaka had 16 in his final game as a Thunderbird.
Cloud hit 11 threes in the game to keep them in it. They were just 7-22 inside the arc.
Cloud County finishes the 2015-16 season at 10-22.
