Cloud Uses Strong Defense to Go 2-0 in Scottie Classic

The Cloud County Thunderbirds picked up two wins on the weekend and held both opponents under 50 points. The T-Birds defeated Highland Community College 59-42 on Friday and turned around and took care of Pure Prep Academy on Saturday by a score of 92-47.

Highland entered the game with a record of 6-1. The T-Birds defense held them to just 42 points on the night. The Scotties shot just 27.1% from the field on the night. The 42 points against was the lowest point total the T-Birds have allowed since February 13, 2013 when they beat Dodge City 72-42.

Cloud County 59 Highland 42

The T-Birds jumped out to a 29-22 lead at halftime despite an awful shooting performance by both teams. Combined, the Scotties and Thunderbirds shot 2-27 from three point land in the first half. Cloud used strong interior play from Henry Cornelious and Demonte Ojinnaka to grab the seven point halftime edge.

Cloud began to heat up after halftime and pull away from the Scotties. The T-Birds would shoot 53% in the second half including 5-9 from three point range. The T-Birds rolled past Highland 59-42.

Ojinnaka was once again a force for Cloud County. He and Cornelious led the T-Birds with 14 apiece. Ojinnaka had 8 rebounds and Cornelious had 7. Freshman Devonte Dixon pitched in with 9 points. Rashun Allen had 8.

Despite using a smaller lineup, Cloud has dominated the glass this year. Once again, the T-Birds won the rebound battle 41-32.

Cloud County 92 Pure Prep 47

It was all Cloud County from start to finish as the T-Birds remained hot on Saturday rolling past Pure Prep 92-47.

It was a balanced scoring effort for the T-Birds as five Thunderbirds scored in double digits.

Ojinnaka led the way again with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Jesse Patrick turned in his best scoring performance as a Thunderbird. The Abilene, KS native scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Cardarius Williams, Dejuan Sherman, and Cornelious all had 10 points for the T-Birds. 12 T-Birds scored in the game.

Cloud shot 53% on the day and outrebounded Pure Prep 56-13.

The T-Birds moved to 6-3 on the season with the two victories and will faceoff with Washburn University JV on Monday night in Concordia.
