The reigning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Central Region Women's Track & Field Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year, Drew Mahin has been promoted to director of Cloud County Community College's cross country and track and field programs.
Mahin has played a huge role in the development of Cloud County athletes both on and off the track, serving as the institution's head men's and women's cross country coach for 13 seasons, and four years as the head women's track and field coach. Mahin's experience also includes serving as the recruiting coordinator for the cross country and track and field programs.
Mahin's resume features two NJCAA National Championships, five NJCAA national runner-up finishes, and nine third-place team finishes at national meets. Mahin has been part of ten Region 6 championships with the men's cross country and track and field teams, and seven Region 6 championships with T-Bird women's cross country and track and field teams.
During his time at Cloud County, Mahin has directly worked with 47 NJCAA relay or individual champions and more than 200+ NJCAA All-American performances, while more than 40 women's records and over 20 men's records have been broken under his leadership.
As director of cross country and track & field, Mahin will oversee all aspects of both the cross country and track programs, including recruiting, training, and coaching of student-athletes while also administering cross country and track assistant coaches and staff.
Mahin led the T-Bird men's cross country team to unprecedented heights in the fall of 2019. The team was ranked number one throughout the year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, on their way to winning their first NJCAA Region 6 and Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West Division titles in program history. Cloud County also won their first national title in 2019. All five runners fielded by the T-Birds placed in the top 40 on the national stage. Mahin was named the Region 6 and NJCAA National Coach of the Year.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams swept the NJCAA Region 6 Division I Championships in 2020. T-Bird Awet Beraki won the men's individual Region 6 title. At that year's NJCAA National Championships, the Cloud County women recorded a national runner-up finish and had three runners earn All-American status (Patricia Koma, Kya Johnson, and Maryse Mbenoun). Koma earned a national runner-up finish in the 2020 NJCAA Half-Marathon Championships, while Beraki won an individual Half-Marathon Championship in a time of 1:05:06.30, the third-fastest time in NJCAA Half-Marathon Championship history.
In the spring of 2019, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association awarded Mahin with NJCAA Men's Assistant Coach of the Year honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons after he helped guide the T-Birds men's track and field program to its first two Region 6/Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Championships, sweeping the indoor and outdoor seasons. The historic 2018-19 season was capped by the program's first NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
