Cloud County Wrestling to Open Conference Duals at Fort Hays Tech Northwest

The Cloud County Community College wrestling team will begin Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) duals on Wednesday, January 14 as they travel to Goodland, Kansas to face Fort Hays Tech Northwest and Neosho County Community College. Matches will begin at 5:30 pm (MST).

Both duals can be streamed live on the Tech Tigers Sports Network.

Cloud County enters Wednesday at 8-5 in duals this season. The T-Birds returned from the Christmas holiday break at the ultra-competitive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coaches Association Duals in Miami, Oklahoma, hosted by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, on Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10. The T-Birds went 6-3 throughout the weekend. Cloud County competed in Pool D. After opening the tournament with a 32-20 loss to No. 5 Southeast Community College and a 36-16 loss to No. 6 North Idaho College, the T-Birds won their last three matches against No. 16 Andrew College (27-23), Triton College (27-27 - T-Birds won on a tiebreaker), and Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (31-7). Cloud County finished third in pool competition, dropping to the consolation bracket on Saturday. The T-Birds opened the final day racking up three straight wins. Cloud County topped Neosho County Community College (37-18), Hawkeye Community College (29-15), and Northeastern Junior College (41-12). In the consolation championship dual, No. 23 Iowa Lakes Community College defeated Cloud County, 39-15.

Competing inside the Glen Wolfe Student Activity Center, sophomore Micah Cauthers (174 lbs.) posted an 8-1 record. Freshman Brayden Hill (285 lbs.) went 7-1. Freshman Dakota Gibson (141 lbs.) finished 7-2, while freshmen David Holguin (184 lbs.), Tyler Pankey (197 lbs.) and Luke Potter (133 lbs.) all earned four wins on the weekend.

Hill has started the month of January nationally ranked at No. 10 at 285 lbs. in the latest NJCAA Men's Wrestling Rankings, released by Open Mat. Hill has enjoyed a terrific start to his Cloud County career this winter, compiling a 28-8 overall record for the T-Birds. Fifteen of his victories have come via pin fall, and he has also added eleven wins by decision and two technical fall wins. Hill has also earned three individual tournament wins this season. The Garden City, Kansas native secured the top spot at the Maverick Open hosted by Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on November 8, followed by a first place finish in the amateur division at the Younes Hospitality Open hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney on November 22, and a first place finish at the Conner/Openheim Doane Open in Crete, Nebraska on December 6, hosted by Doane University.

Last year, Cloud County suffered a 37-15 dual loss to Fort Hays Tech Northwest in Goodland, Kansas. The T-Birds also dropped a 24-21 dual to Neosho County Community College at a home tri-dual.
