CONCORDIA, Kan. – Concluding a stretch of three straight Wednesdays at home with Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference duals, the Cloud County Community College wrestling team had little trouble taking care of business against Colby Community College and Barton Community College by winning duals by scores of 44-7 and 39-12 inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on January 31st.
Winners of three-straight KJCCC duals, Cloud County improves to 6-8 on the year in dual action with one dual remaining in their regular season schedule. In conference action, CCCC is 3-3 through six of their seven scheduled duals with one final dual remaining to conclude KJCCC dual action.
Against Colby:
Picking up 12 points off the Trojans after seeing Colby open at 125 pounds and 184 pounds, there wasn't much issue for the T-Birds in the eight contested matches as six went the way of the T-Birds with all six CCCC wins coming in bonus-point fashion. At 133 pounds,
Daniel Vines jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first period with a takedown and four-point near fall before giving up an escape and two takedowns to JD Goolsby of Colby to see things tied at 7-7 heading to the second period. Vines had choice of starting position in the second and started in the bottom position to score an escape to reclaim the lead at 8-7 before getting another takedown and not looking back as things ended with 1:07 left in the period with a fall for the Concordia, Kansas native.
The 12-0 lead for Cloud County was cut into by the Trojans at 141 pounds as CCCC's
Collin Smith was shut out in a 10-0 major decision loss to Xzavier Martinez before seeing
Tarik Adkins get the T-Birds back in the win column by scoring three first-period takedowns as part of a 20-10 major decision win at 149 pounds. Another fall for Cloud County came at 157 pounds with sophomore
Dylan Ancheta taking care of business by scoring a first-period and four-point near fall before adding another takedown and four-point near fall in the second that eventually led to a pin with 1:03 left in the period. Things continued to be all T-Birds in the 165-pound match with
Erik Darling never trailing in a 16-4 major decision with 10 of his points coming in the final two minutes of wrestling.
Holding a 26-4 lead, Cloud County earned another 12 points over the next two matches with
Macallistair Chambers earning the lone first-period fall of the dual at 174 pounds over Dante Brown before seeing
Wyatt Powell earn a forfeit win at 184 pounds. Colby picked up their second and final win at 197 pounds with an 8-6 decision by Ethan Anderson as CCCC's
D.J. Gillins saw a 5-3 lead in the second period get erased by a takedown for Anderson before a third-period escape and riding time point to finish off an 8-6 Trojan win. Putting the T-Birds back in the win column to close out the dual, heavyweight
Gavin Nutting worked through a scoreless two periods of action with a stalling warning on Colby's Nick Martinez being the only call through five minutes of wrestling until a two-point near fall in the third was quickly offset by a reversal for Nutting that turned into a fall just 31 seconds in the period.
Against Barton:
Another quick lead for the T-Birds was had as the Cougars did not have a wrestler at 125 pounds to allow
Brady Foster to pick up a forfeit win to begin the dual before seeing Vines earn his second fall of the day with a second-period victory after leading 7-0 in the match against Avery Wolf. Cloud County's lead was cut in half following the 141-pound match as Stephan Baldwin was able to earn a first-period fall and get BCC on the scoreboard before seeing Adkins go on the offensive at 149 pounds with three first-period takedowns to jump out to a 9-2 lead and build a 14-2 lead that finished as a 14-4 major decision win. Another major decision for CCCC came at 157 pounds with Ancheta holding Barton's Deryk Yott scoreless until the third period while building a 10-0 lead and giving up just two escapes as part of a 14-2 win that was followed by an 11-1 major decision for
Easton Boone at 165 pounds. The only technical fall of either Cloud County dual came at 174 pounds with Chambers scoring two takedowns and four-point near falls to jump out to a 14-1 lead as a reversal 22 seconds into the second period put the Salina, Kansas native up 15 to force the match to officially end. Powell added a first-period fall at 184 pounds over Edgar Duarte Quiroz to go along with a 21-8 major decision for Gillins at 197 pounds with Barton's Dorian Hippen managing to score only one takedown over the seven minutes. The final match of the night saw Nutting unable to maintain a 3-0 lead as a first-period takedown and ride-out allowed BCC's Nathan Agudzi to defer his choice to the third period and get an advantageous spot in top position where he was able to turn Nutting to his back for a fall with 35 seconds left in the period.
