WICHITA, Kansas — The Cloud County Community College wrestling team had three athletes compete Sunday at the Kansas Cup, hosted by Newman University in Wichita.
Cloud County, limited by a number of illnesses and injuries to its roster, still managed to finished 9th out of 12 teams thanks to big performances from sophomore Ryan Delforge and freshman Jorge Vega.
Delforge finished the tournament 3-1 overall in the 157-pound class, capping his afternoon with an 8-6 decision win over Neosho County's Ryan Brown in the third-place match.
As for Vega, who has been battling his way back after missing time himself, he finished fourth overall in the 125-pound division with a 2-2 tournament record. Each of his two losses were at the hands of NCAA Division II opponents.
"It was nice to see Vega back on the mat. He kind of needed it to get back in shape and he wrestled pretty well," said Cloud County head coach, Cody Cole. "Delforge again fought through some close matches and wrestled very well. If he continues, I can see him doing some big things and competing well the rest of the year."
The T-Birds will now look to rest up, get healthy and prepare to resume KJCCC dual action at 6 p.m. this Wednesday against Cowley College.
It'll be a rematch of a Jan. 8 dual between the two teams, won 33-14 by Cowley.
Cloud County was down three weight classes in the first meeting. Cole said Sunday he hopes the T-Birds, who won three of the seven matches wrestled back on Jan. 8, will have eight guys ready to go for Wednesday's showdown.
Action gets underway at 6 p.m. in Arkansas City.
