CONCORDIA, Kan. – After earning a 2-1 home victory over Kansas City Kansas Community College on Sunday, the Cloud County Community College men’s soccer team will now set its sights on Cowley College for a 4:30 p.m. matchup at Arkansas City High School on Friday, November 1st.
The meeting will pit the second-seeded Tigers against the third-seeded T-Birds as Cowley was the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference East Division regular-season champions and is coming off a 3-1 win over Garden City Community College on Sunday afternoon. Friday’s matchup will mark the second consecutive season that Cloud County and Cowley have squared off in the NJCAA Region VI Playoffs, with the Tigers earning a 6-1 victory last season.
Over the course of the past two seasons, Cowley holds a 28-4-2 overall record and is coming off a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament last season while holding an 11-1-2 overall record this year. The only blemish on the record for the Tigers in 2019 was a 3-1 home loss to Neosho on October 21st and have since gone 5-0-1. Teams are averaging just under one goal per game against Cowley this season as the Tigers are averaging 3.43 goals per game on the offensive side of things and will look to forward Elluan Martins Gomes as the sophomore has 13 goals this season. Lucas Mauro will also prove to be an offensive threat, scoring nine goals and adding four assists on the season.
Cloud County will need to rely on defense as the T-Birds have allowed just nine goals all season, with only the game against Dodge City on September 7th seeing a team score more than once. Since a September 21 loss to Barton, Cloud County has allowed just three goals while outscoring opponents 46-3 as part of a nine-match unbeaten streak. Felipe D’Agostini (15 goals, eight assists) and Djougher Oliveira (nine goals, six assists) will be the two key offensive components for CCCC as the pair have combined for 62 total points this year.
A win for the T-Birds would Allow Cloud County to advance to the NJCAA Plains District Championship which will be held on November 6th and 7th in Wichita, Kansas. Two teams from the KJCCC will meet up with the winners of Region two and Region five for the four-team District.
