HESSTON, Kan. – Held scoreless until the 17th minute of play, the Cloud County Community College men's soccer team would find their offensive attack with three first-half goals and add two more midway through the second half to secure a 5-1 road victory at Hesston College on Wednesday, September 4th.
The win marks the third-straight victory for the T-Birds who are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Larks fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the KJCCC.
A pair of missed opportunities would see Cloud County have chances in the early going as the T-Birds would be unable to break through until a goal from Jackson Brown at the 16:19 mark of the first half gave CCCC a 1-0 lead. Cloud County would continue to put shots up with the first five shots of the game coming from the T-Birds as Hesston would be held without a shot attempt until nearly 30 minutes into the contest.
Holding onto a one goal lead, CCCC would find the back of the net for a second time on the night when Leonardo Velazco scored at the 36:43 mark to make the score 2-0 to make things a bit more comfortable for the T-Birds. Looking to add before halftime, Cloud County would do just that as a foul in the 18-yard box allowed Thomas Santos to take a penalty kick for the T-Birds, as the sophomore would convert and make the score 3-0 heading into the break.
Five of the first six shots in the second half would come from Cloud County before a shot from Tanner Anderson of Hesston would manage to find its way into the back of the net and cut the CCCC lead down to 3-1 with 30 minutes remaining in the game. It wouldn't take long for the T-Birds to respond as Felipe D'Agostini would score just over four minutes later to put Cloud County back up by a three-goal margin at 4-1.
A second penalty in the box would be drawn by CCCC as it would be Jelldrik Dallmann who would be asked to step up and take the shot with the freshman forward finishing his second penalty kick of the year and team-best sixth goal to put the T-Birds up 5-1. The final 20 minutes of action would be up and down as both teams would see opportunities to put shots on goal, but the score would remain a four-goal margin as neither team would be able to add to their total with the T-Birds earning the win in their conference opener.
Holding a commanding 30-7 advantage in total shots, Cloud County would allow just five shots on goal to the Larks while letting off 19 shots that would wind up on target while forcing 10 saves from Hesston keeper Tanner Unruh. 18 shots for the T-Birds would come in the final 45 minutes of play as CCCC would also hold a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks throughout the contest.
Leading Cloud County offensively would be D'Agostini with six shots on goal leading to his one goal as all five goals would come from different players. Noberto Vieira played all 90 minutes in net for the T-Birds, turning away three shots while earning his first victory of the year.
A chance to return home and take on the Conquistadors of Dodge City Community College awaits the T-Birds as DC3 will come to Concordia for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, September 7th. Dodge City is 2-0-1 on the year and 0-0-1 in the KJCCC following a 2-2 tie against Pratt on Wednesday.
