CONCORDIA, Kansas — Cloud County Community College sophomore Wanes Hobat has landed a new home for next fall as on Monday the T-Birds' right back inked with Oral Roberts University, a NCAA Division I program in the Summit League.
"It was the right fit because I thought the offer was great. They offered me a chance to also play on their summer league team and, after talking with my family, I just knew I had to go there," Hobat said. "When I made my visit, the campus was huge and I fell in love with it. I saw the field, trained with their players, and everything was a good fit."
Hobat, a 5-foot, 6-inch defender out of Paris, France, was a two-year starter for the T-Birds.
He was voted All-Conference in both seasons and was voted the KJCCC West Defensive Player of the Year honors this year. Hobat would also add a Second-Team All-Region VI selection as a sophomore after anchoring a Cloud County defense that limited opponents to a 1.23 goals against average.
In addition to his suffocating play on defense, Hobat displayed the speed and vision to be an offensive contributor, as well, finishing his two-year career at Cloud County with five assists.
"Wanes is a tremendous player and I'm glad ORU was able to sign him. There was tons of interest from NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II programs," said Cloud County head coach, Charles Long. "He's special. Anyone who watched our games knew it. He's fast, he can overlap and attack and his attitude is very good. I think it's great for us as a program for him to go to a NCAA Division I school, but for him it is a great opportunity to go play at that level. We're excited for him."
