OTTUMWA, Iowa — The Cloud County Community College men's soccer team battled toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country Saturday at the Wells Fargo Cup, hosted by Indian Hills Community College, but fell 2-0 to No. 19 Marshalltown Community College.
"I was very pleased with the guys, I thought they played well against a quality ranked opponanet in Marshalltown that has not given up a goal all year," said Cloud County head coach, Charles Long. "Both of (the Tigers) goals were off set plays. We're still struggling to find a goal scorer, but we were creating some opportunities and I thought we had the better opportunities in the second half, the ball just wouldn't get in. Tomorrow we'll regroup and see what we can do before starting off in the conference."
Cloud County (1-2 overall) and Marshalltown (3-0 overall) played each other to a draw through the first 45 minutes to head into the half scoreless. It was a defensive struggle all afternoon between the two teams, with just a total of 10 shots on goal (6-4, Marshalltown) in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kegan Lammering, making his first start of the season took the tough-luck loss for Cloud County, but proved to be a serviceable option for the T-Birds alongside fellow sophomore goalkeeper, Charles Albuquerque.
Lammering made four saves, including one off a penalty kick attempt for Marshalltown in the first half.
"I figured we had two big games before we start our conference schedule and I wanted Kegan to get a full 90 minutes under his belt," said Long about Lammering getting the starting nod. "I thought we played well, showed us what he can do and what we can work on, and did a good job for us (Saturday)."
The Tigers broke the ice 10 minutes into the second half with the first goal of the came, and added their insurance goal on a free kick from 20-yards out with 18:55 remaining in the half to dash the T-Birds hopes for a comeback attempt.
Cloud County will look to bounce back on the final day of the Wells Fargo cup when it plays tournament hosts Indian Hills at 11 a.m. Sunday.
