CONCORDIA, Kansas — As the 2017-18 school year inches closer, Cloud County Community College is inviting the community to welcome in the fall season on August 12 with its inaugural Rack'Em & Back'Em Booster Club BBQ Bash.
The event, hosted at the Broadway Plaza in Concordia, will feature a BBQ competition, kid activities, and live music by Bryson Michael & The Free Nation. Funds raised from the BBQ Bash go toward scholarships for Cloud County student-athletes.
The day will begin with kid activities between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which include a sidewalk chalk contest, face painting, a dunk tank, use of the splash pad, as well as volleyball and soccer activities.
Evening events, such as the live music, booster club registration, and BBQ contest, run from 6 p.m. through 10:30 p.m.
For those interested in being contest judges, the first 50 people to buy a $5 Sampler Ticket will vote on the People's Choice award. In addition, a pulled pork meal, which includes BBQ beans, chips and a drink, will be available to the public for $5, while beer wristbands will be sold for $15.
All ticket orders can be made the day of the event or online through Cloud County's athletic website, www.cloudtbirds.com, under the "Fan Zone" tab.
As of July 18, limited spaces were still available for teams interested in competing in the BBQ contest. The competition categories include: Freestyle Meat (chicken, ribs, pork or beef), BBQ Sauce, "Anything Butt" (dessert, beans, potatoes, or an additional side dish), and People's Choice. Competitors must have entries in all four meat categories to be eligible for the Grand Champion award.
Grand Champion wins a $250 cash prize and a trophy, while category winners earn $50 gift cards. The People's Choice winner takes home a 50/50 split of the $5 Sampler Ticket proceeds. Those interested in competing are asked to contact Stephanie Downie at (785) 243-1435 ext. 234.
The Cloud County Community College cross country teams will also be hosting its first Downhill Mile Challenge the morning of August 12, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., prior to the BBQ Bash.
Entire families are encouraged to come compete for bragging rights across three separate divisions: kindergartden-8th grade, high school (2016-17 graduating class), and adult.
The entry fee is $15 per participant, or $20 per participant if registration is done after August 6. All entries include the pulled pork meal ticket to the BBQ Bash.
Registration for the Downhill Mile Challenge can be done online through Cloud County's athletic website. The link is available on the team pages for men and women's cross country.
The race will start at 9 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, located on West 11th St. and will conclude at Broadway Plaza.
